Pretty cool round.
The 416 Taylor conversion is a s straight forward as it gets.
And efficiency, just under 78.0 grs of RL17 push a 400 gr bullet at 2475!
That is all you need for anything on the globe.

JD338

I know! And how much powder does the Rigby use to get 2400 fps with a 400?????

Fotis,

103.0 grs H4350. I shot one a couple weeks ago.
I'm still rather partial to the 416 Wby though. ;)

Thks Fotis - 2650 fps with a 350 gr-er will get er done !

MAY I SUGGEST A SERIOUS 350 GRAIN BULLET FOR BIG GAME?

DONT USE THE SPEER. TRY THE THREE HUNDRED SEVENTY GRAIN NORTH FORK INSTEAD. IT IS BONDED SOLID BASE LIKE A TBBC BUT BETTER. (BARNES BORROWED THEIR USE OF GROOVED BEARING SURFACE TO REDUCE COPPER FOULING AND PRESSURE).

I SHOT A BUFFAO AT POINT BLANK RANGE IN 2005 WITH A 400 AND 450 GRAIN .458 NORTH FORK AT 2750 FPS AND 2550 FPS. THE 450 HAS SIMILAR SD AS THE THREE HUNDRED SEVENTY GRAIN FOUR SIXTEEN.

I GOT EIGHTY FIVE CALIBER AND NINETY PERCENT WEIGHT RETENTION AND A BIG BULDGE ON OFFSIDE SHOULDER WHERE BULLETS WERE RECOVERED. EVEN AFTER BREAKING BOTH FEMURS WITH THE LITTLE FOUR HUNDRED GRAIN. I DONT THINK ANY OTHER BULLET OF THAT SD AND VELOCITY COULD DO THAT.

DONT FOOL YOURSELF ABOUT TAYLOR THOUGH. LOOK AT PSI OF THE HIGHER VELOCITY LOADS. YOU DONT WANT TO GO THERE AT ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DEGREES F ON A SAND RIVER IN ZIMBABWAE TRACKING ELEPHANT.

I KNOW A FELOW WHO LOVES THE TAYLOR AND HAS KILLED MANY BULL ELEPHANTS WITH IT USING WOODLEIGH FMJ RN. KNOCK ONE HUNDRED FEET PER SECOND OFF THOSE QUICKLOAD MAXIMUM VELOCITIES FOR THE DARK CONTINENT.

ONLY PURPOSE FOR A TAYLOR IS LIGHT WEIGHT COMPARED TO A REMINGTON OR RIGBY. SO CONSIDER A FAIRLY LIGHT AND SHORT BARRREL?

ALSO LOOK AT THE GOOD OLD FOUR O FOUR JEFFERY.

GOOD HUNTING.

Good point on the pressures. That is why the old classic African rounds are favored, they are rum at lower pressures. If you want faster speeds, get a bigger engine (case).

Tks for the info - i am building this 416 fairley light - A #3 taper sporter barrel 21 " lenght i have decided - i will prob use a B & C stock for it

A #3 sounds pretty light for 416 Taylor are you sure you don't want to go slightly heavier?

Hello Rem Jim,

I'm on my second 416 Taylor...
Bought the first one, a used rifle built by Ralf Martini on a blued right handed Ruger action, with a 22" barrel back in '98. At the time I had some 350 gr Swift A-Frames that came with the rifle, but thought that they were too expensive to use for load development. So after talking to Barnes, played with the 325 and 350 gr X Bullets and IMR 3031. Which I had found a good supply at a cheaper price. Do not recall the exact loads, but do recall that I used the same charge as they recommended for the 400 gr X, and got very accurate groups at 100 yards (three bullets all touching in a classic cloverleaf pattern) with open sights, and decent recoil.(Found that it felt less than my 338 Win Mag with 225 gr ammo). Was a pleasure to shoot. The fellow that now owns the rifle took a nice elk running through the aspens, and had the bullet kill the elk after completely penetrating a 10" aspen that he did not recall seeing as the elk ran across in front of him at just under 100 yards!
I had always said that I would get another, but on a left handed rifle. Finally had the rifle commissioned about 6 years ago. Took them 3 years to build the rifle as I was not in a big hurry, and also wanted to get the properly head stamped brass from Quality Cartridge in to use in this rifle (which took a while to get).
It is on a left handed Ruger action, with a 22" King barrel in a Wenig pepper laminated stock. I had the barrelled action tefloned, and had two cross bolts installed in the stock, and it is pillar bedded and glass bedded as well. I had a banded front sight installed, and have a removable NECG peep sight made for the Ruger integral rear base, for when I need a back up sight. I do intend to get a Trijicon 1-4 scope with a green triangle/post reticle for this rifle. Unfortunately, with other priorities since |I have brought this rifle home, I have not sat down at the bench to start loading for this rifle. But it is on my priority list for this spring. Since I will not be going to Africa for a couple of years, I will be focusing on the 350 gr bullets first for some serious bear and bison hunting.
A great cartridge with plenty of frontal area on bullets that will penetrate like crazy, and won't kill your shoulder. The cartridge will handle anything that walks, has proven field performance on the biggest of the big 6, and will tame the nastiest of our bears with bad attitudes that we could ever come across. And quite a bit of load data out there for it. A recipe for fun, and something a little more unique than what most of the guys at the range will be shooting.
Oh, and the Boyd's stocks are not overly pricey, but not sure for your action. But definitely install cross bolts.

That 450 gr at 2200 fps will penetrate more than the 458 Lott!

And that is a LOTT of pentration ! lol

Cheers :) RJ

Just the ticket for deer in the Queen Charlottes :) you could probably fill all 5 tags with one shot

Fotis,

A 450 grain 416 soft point at 2200 fps will not necessarily out penetrate a Lott with a 500 grain at 2200 fps.

Energy divided by unit of frontal area predicts penetration of a FMJ of identical design and configuration pretty well but does not take into acconut stability.

But penetration of a soft point depends almost entirely on how much frontal area the bullet develops. In emperical tests on ballistic media and buffalo, an expanding 400 grain .458 can equal the penetration of a 400 grain .416 even though the .416 has much greater SD. In my tests of hundreds of bullets in water buckets penetration is governed by FA of the expanded bullet.

It is difficult to test large bore FMJ's because they penetrate so much water or gelatin. FMJRN veer off course when they "tumble" which they invarably do, and FN solids penetrate way more than they do in elephants. 3/4 inch pine boards spaced one inch apart like Mike Lagrange used in Kruger many years ago correlates more closely than water when comparing both FMJ RN and FN bullets.

It is easy and fun to test your statement, and I hope you will give it a try.

the heavy for caliber FMJ or monometals definately penetrate more than the lighter for calibers in a solid. (About 20% more as i recall).

yet I prefer the lighter bonded soft points because they do so much more damage with their large temporary cavity.

after much experimentation and a buffalo and elephant I came up with use a heavy FN for elephant and a lighter bonded solid base for everything else.

The heavy for caliber bullets like the 450 grain .416 has real problems with stability even with a quick twist once it hits flesh and bone.

I will try to upload my FMJ and premium .458 tests to the bullet test site.

Dont get me wrong, I like the 416 Taylor. the short bolt throw is a big advantage, as much or more so than the light weight. I used a 3.75 inch long Magnum Mauser style action (highly modified CZ550) and the bolt actually dips down on full extraction and slows down the bolt throw. Though I operated it pretty fast when I ran into a tuskless cow at nine paces. Could have done it faster w the short .416, and been less winded after carrying my 450 Dakota land cannon 20 miles after buffalo.

Yes you're correct. I was speaking in theoretical terms.

Theoretically speaking given the same construction of the bullets the one with the greatest Sectional density will penetrate more in the same exact media.

416 450 .371
450 500 .310

Either one will penetrate into tomorrow.
