I just bought this ruger redhawk with a 7.5 inch barrel and I have a box of 300 gr Hornady Xtp's. Can I use these on whitetail deer. I live in missouri where the deer bodies are pretty small in the middle of the state.
I have either 2400 or Imr 4227 to choose from as far as powders.
Do I have a load somewhere in their to take a deer down humanely.
I have about 100 yd openings. Usually shots are taken within 50 yds. I guess my question is do I have to go out and buy a lower weight bullet to be effective or can I throw something together with what I have.

Try 17 grains of 2400,and see what kind of accuracy you get.

The 300 gr XTP will make for a great hunting bullet. If they do not shoot good, try the Nosler 300 gr JHP or the 240 gr JHP.
For hunting, I use the Nosler 250 gr PT with 21.0 grs H110.
This load leaves nice exit wounds and heavy blood trails.

I have also gotten some great accuracy with IMR 4227 in the .44 mag.You will probably find that the gun likes 2400,4227,296, or 110.My 7 1/2 Redhawk loves 2400.I use to have an 8 3/8 " model 629 that loved 4227.

In my Ruger RH I use the 200gr Nosler HP and 29gr H-110 with a mag primer. It is fast and super accurate. I have taken several deer and a large black bear with this load and my readhawk. The Nosler PAR bullet would be a great load with H-110 also. The 300gr bullet will work and so would 2400 or 4227 but I found the 300gr bullet more than I needed and I dislike the 2400 due to it being dirty and giving less speed than the H-110.

I was told in a phone conversation by the president of AA powders that H110 and win 296 are identical powders.I have my doubts about this , but that is what he said.A healthy load of 296 always felt like a grenade went off in your hand, whereas; 110 always felt a bit softer.

I use LILGUN or h110 with my 300 xrp's in my Big red.

The sight turned out to be a dud. The bead is too large to use with the V notch, and the blade is too narrow to use with the regular rear sight. Forget that one.

Something very interesting that I just discovered. Ruger makes their own Hi Viz front sight for the Redhawk. It is (different) from the one I tried by Marbles. I believe it may be the correct width to work with the rear sight. As far as I know it is only available directly from Ruger.Unfortunately it is $38.85 retail :( .I don't know if it can be had cheaper somewhere else, but it would be great in the deep woods or around sunset. With my poor eyesight ,that is the one I need.

I am going to buy one in green and put a Millet white outline rear sight on my gun. That should be the next best thing to having a Red Dot mounted on the barrel.
