45-70 loads

Great intel, Dave. Thank you. That much mass will penetrate about any game in NA.

I really like the 300 grain bullets for deer hunting in the thick stuff of Va. More than enough bullet for Whitetails and still moving around 2200-2350 depending on what powder i use. Currently using Win brass and H4198. I hope to get switched over to Starline brass and RL-7 before hunting season.

The thick stuff.

WC where is the "thick stuff"? Those are shooting lanes here on the west side of Oregon.

Or in the spruce thickets of northern BC! That's why I said it looks pretty open to me.

Here is a recovered 458 cal 300 gr BST from a deer at 75 yds. MV is 2200 fps.
About 26" of penetration.

Those pics look good, but only about 50 yard shots at best. Those two areas are somewhat better than some of the really thick stuff we hunt in Va.

Gentlemen This is truly great, tons of relevant info, gobs of first hand knowledge and pictures to boot! I own lots of rifles but this one Winchester is rapidly becoming my favorite shooter plus I just like holding it and looking at it. The variety of possibility's for loads is amazing. I have never cast my own bullets but I think that's going to change, soon. I really appreciate this forum and it's contributors. Thanks again. Be safe. Newysan

Some 300 gr JHP bullets expand real fast, too easily in my opinion...

Swift A-Frame's reputation stands amongest the best. However, over all the bullets mentioned so far, I don't think the is a slouch in the bunch. Those Beartooth's certainly are some deadly looking cast, also Guy.

Gentlemen This rifle is becoming an adventure. The cast bullet "bug" has been planted and I am headed that direction. Research has turned an interesting article which I think most here will enjoy reading. Lots of good info with a slight lean towards to pistols bullet design but a lot of relevant thoughts on design. Enjoy. Newysan http://www.lasc.us/fryxellbulletsofssk.htm

Adventure=bug bite, bug bite = addiction,,,,,just so you know
Casting your own is far less costly in the long run,,,but most find it don't save any money. Just end up shooting more
I was also going to post that link,,,,,,,everthing one needs to know on cast bullet. Lots of good info there!

Awesome!
You can't help but grin when you fire a 45-70.

Gentlemen I have been recommended 5744 earlier but the problem is I live in the boonies and the local "gun and shooting supply" has a very limited inventory. That leaves shipping and we all know about haz mat fees blah blah. Going out of town this weekend and hopefully will find a better stocked store. Going over recommended loads makes me wonder that very less than a full case may produce some sort of flash over problems? I mentioned this to a seasoned 45-70 fan and he suggested filling the excess space with oatmeal . I was thinking of using an empty case as a cutter/punch and punching out some Dacron material. I could foresee that when a not so full cartridge is in the horizontal {carry/shoot} mode the primer might flash over the top of the powder and then who knows what. Just a thought to toss out there. Again thanks for all the responses. Newysan
