In the past I've handloaded and hunted with 405 gr Remington bullets, loaded to about 1700 - 1800 fps from my 22" Marlin. Also dabbled with 350 gr Hornadys. Have met with success using both H-4198 and Reloader 7.

Started hearing glowing reports of success in the field with 300 grain Noslers. Hearing good things about 'em on game as diverse as black bear, elk, moose and mule deer - all of which I'm interested in hunting.

Shot some less expensive 300 grainers with excellent accuracy from my rifle, but haven't done any serious loading for 'em - and haven't played with the 300 gr Nosler Partitions at all. At a buck apiece, I'm not keen on doing a bunch of plinking with them, but would like to work up a serious hunting load, and use it this fall. Any recommendations? Experiences with the 300 on game?

Thanks, Guy

Hey Guy. I love them. Maybe the best all around bullet for the .450 and 45-70. I have killed a pile of deer with them and you might already know about the 3 huge black bears taken with them. I have a bunch of data but to get it perfect it must be matched to the brass. Are you using Starline, Remington or Winchester brass? reflex264

ps- after killing something with these you will be ready to dump that pesky .308. When you get ready you can just send it to me for disposal.

Reloader 7 @ 51.8
350 gr Hornady FN

Top end load for Marlin GG 45-70 only..........very good black bear and moose load!

I've tried a number of different bullets and powders in my Guide Gun. The go-to load is 58 grains of Hodgdon Varget under a Hornady 350 grain Round Nose bullet using CCI 200 primers. I can pack more Varget into the case but accuracy sufferes. Hodgdon lists 60 grains as the max load. It's a low pressure powder in the 45-70 but produces between 1900 and 2000 fps in my short barelled cannon. Lots of people dismiss Varget as a candidate powder but once they try it they're hooked.
