Hi guys,

I just purchased a Marlin 1895 in 45-70. I'm going to be using a Hornady 350gr. round nose, IMR 3130, Winchester brass and CCI primers. The only reason why I'm using the Hornady bullet is because here in Quebec, it would take like 4 to 6 months to get the 300 Partition or the 300 combined technologie round nose that I initially wanted, that's if I can get it at all.:( Anywho, the main question I have is how important is OCL on the 45-70 or do I just crimp at the canular and I'm good to go?

Thanks in advance
Mike

Congratulations on the 1895 45-70. You are going to love it!
The Marlins can se fussy with bullet seating depth. I would crimp at the cannelure.

If I am not mistaken, the 458 350 gr RN is designed for the 458 Win Mag and the 350 gr FN is designed for the 45-70. I tested the Nosler 458 300 gr BST last fall and took three WT deer with this bullet with excellent results! Accuracy from my 1895 Guide was impressive, .400" c/c at 100 yds. This bullet is worth the wait.

Thanks, you're right about the Hornady 350 round nose being made for the 458 magnum, I believe the only problem if it's a problem is bullet expansion at the 45-70 velocities. I will place an order for both the Partition and CT round nose in 300gr and hope for the best. What propellant are you using to push the CT round nose?

Canuck, I use the 300gr PT with H4198 and get into the 2300's with that load. It is a killer load and very accurate. I wouldn't worry too much about the 350gr Hornady expanding, it is a great bullet. If you could get some FN's, those would be better yet. At worst, you will have a .45 cal hole and likely more. H322 is another great powder to try. If you can get some of the PT's, Northforks, or Swift A-Frames, those are excellent also. I think you will love the 45-70. It is really one of my favorites and find a hard time using anything else! The only powder I have tried in the 45-70 is H 322. Sub MOA accuracy and I can push 300 gr bullets oner 2200 fps. I throttled back the velocity to 2050 fps with 59.0 grs H 322.
This was my sight in target with the new Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32mm scope.

I recovered this bullet after it penetrated about 26" of whitetail.

I used this same bullet im my T/C Omega muzzel loader and shot this buck. Exit wound shows plenty of expansion.

The Nosler 458 300 gr BST is a great bullet.

I really like the 300 gr PP but they are tough to find. Penetration is unreal. I recovered in the 8th 1 gallon water jug. MV was 2200 fps.

I shot a 300gr PT all the way through a 12" diameter red pine log! It was unreal and looked exactly as Jims does. It is a bullet that defies the way a light for caliber 458 bullet should act. It really is a great one. Hope Nosler releases some more of them soon. I am still hoping to get some 300gr BST's to try out. They seem like they are dynamite deer bullets. Not sure I would wanna put one in an elk but for deer and beer they are pretty scary! Scotty
