Florida has a bill coming that will allow armed security/executive protection to start carrying either 9mm, 40 SW, OR 45!!!

With that being said, if this bill passes, which I am certain it will, a 45 is on the horizon. I am debating a Sig 220 Carry Elite Dark or a commander-sized 1911, probably a STI.

What would you choose and why? It would be used for EDC, either in a Safariland duty holster or in a Crossbreed inside the waistband holster.

I'd say 45....just because they don't make a 46................

Depends on what you feel comfortable with. The full size 1911 can be concealed in a bandaid holster and don't trust the 8 round mags for function. or if you want light weight get a Glock. What ever you feel comfortable with if you have to use it. Me I'd carry a full size 1911 with decent sights. Maybe a Les Bare or Ed Brown.

I looked at a few Colts, as well as Springfields. I have shot a Sig 1911 and it was phenomenal, but wasnt "traditional", i.e. the extractor design. I really would like a full sized frame but 4" barreled 1911, which is why I am leaning STI because they have the Ranger II and Lawman 4.0, which both are a full sized frame with a commander slide.

I've got a Colt Rail Gun that I used to carry off duty but have gone to the Sig P226 with a DAK as it replicates what I use at work.

For me the 1911 has been relegated to a "fun gun" but I'm partial to Colt in the 1911 right now as they are putting out the best quality they have ever made, IMHO. I also own a Springfield but it comes in a distant second to the Colt.

I have heard mixed things regarding the Colts. I played with a Colt not to long ago at my shop, and the edges on it were sharp and finish wasnt to spectacular. Maybe it was one that slipped through? Will have to look at a few more.

BTW, I hear that Rail Gun is a good one. Has to be since the Corps is going to be using a version of it :)

A.J. I have a 70 Colt that I had railed because the previous owner was a table top gun smith and tried to polish the action rails and made the slide to frame to loose to maintain consistant lock up. So I sent it to Kreiger in WI and had it railed and now it's as smooth as glass plus I saved it from the scrap heap.

I know everyone here seems to love Kimber, and after handling one I must say they are VERY nice, but the warranty and stories floating around of the company kind of scare me off. Did look at a few Para's today, wasnt too thrilled.

A few years ago I had a Dan Wesson 1911.

Oh my goodness. It was as tight and accurate as a true match-grade pistol. Loved the accuracy, and in retrospect I should have kept it.

I got mad at it one day in SWAT quals when it balked a bit... It was really too tight for gun grease, LSWC handloads and cold weather. With factory spec 230 gr FMJ ammo it was incredibly accurate... Just a little balky. I was treating it like a combat weapon instead of a match-grade firearm.

Trigger was superb. Slide to frame fit was nothing less than top notch. Accuracy was superb. And I sold it.

Another thousand rounds of hardball, or maybe some hand lapping, and it would have become 100% reliable.

There are several other top-name 1911's out there. Take a hard look at the Sig - it's a great gun. Also check on Les Baer, Wilson Combat and Nighthawk. I'm considering treating myself to one of those top-notch 1911's someday. They're all very, very good.

I not only have had wonderful performance from my 16 year old/50,000+ round Kimber, but my son's brand new Kimber is working flawlessly and always has. Right out of the box. Three of my buddies at work treated themselves to Kimber 1911's. They ALL work flawlessly and shoot very well. I have yet to see a 1911 Kimber that didn't work very well, far better than the Colt I used to carry.

Regards, Guy

Guy,

Your experiences with Kimber mirror mine with Colt. I guess all we can do is pay our money and take our chances.

My total price I would pay for a 1911 is under $1100 USD, so unfortunately the higher-end guns are out of my league.

I am liking the looks of the Kimber Tactical Pro II and their Pro Covert II. Both match everything I am looking for.

Then there is the Sig 1911 Carry Nightmare. Looks pretty sweet.

Dan Wessons have intrigued me, and I will try to track one down as well.

I have shot an Ed Brown before, and it was insane accurate and smooth. I also handled a Nighthawk at the local shop, but the sticker price blew me away.

I have a WC and a Dan Wesson Valor
Also had numerous other "good" 1911s

I love my DW and it has never had an issue with all sorts of ammo all the way up to 255g+p hard cast that I carry hunting with me.

Very handsome, AJ. Don't know that I'd jettison a Glock for it, but it would be pretty.

I love my Kimber 1911 Tactical Pro II 45 ACP. It sits in a custom IWB holster by HBE Leatherworks in SLC,UT. Eric Larson does excellent work.

The 230 gr loads are very effective, even on WT deer through the shoulders.

What do the Kimber onwers have to say in regards to Kimbers customer service dept?

Ajvigs, I would give a good look at the Kimber Pro carry. I've been carrying one for quite a while and have shot it a lot with no problems. The only thing I added was night sights more for the white outline than anything else. I carry it in a standard Kimber holster (I believe made by Galco).I'm pleased with the combination.

Late to the party, but if you're looking at a 45 sig, don't forget about the new Sig P227. It's basically a 226 frame setup for 45. 10 round mags (larger than the 220) with 14 rounders available sometime.

I really like mine, even if it's maybe not as gun game friendly as my 21SF.

Absolute pleasure to shoot, and you can use the same holster as your 226 that you'll get down the road.
