450 Marlin

Dan, I am right here buddy! 6 boxes, check, rifle, check... Break out the cash, credit or a check.. HA!

Trust me buddy, you'll like it. I am betting decent money the Hornady ammo will shoot well and be more than enough for deer around your parts. I am thinking you'll be impressed with the accuracy of the rifle once you lay your hands on it. The Marlins will shoot like your 270 if they are fed decent ammo.

Dan, just buy the rifle and grab up that ammunition. Scotty is right--what's to think about. Just do it. That 450 Marlin will put a grin on your face each time you shoot it. Plus, you'll have the pleasure of shooting something that not every other New Yorker is shooting. Hey, it even qualifies as a legal gun under the SAFE Act.

2012 Moose season one of our guys took a 3 year old bull Moose with the 450 marlin at about 100 yards that Moose did not know if he had been punched or bored but he definitely was DRT . It took us about 4 hours to get him out after cutting back in and then we field dressed him.

Blessings,
Dan

Well guys (and gals), I went back to the LGS. Only this time I stopped at the bank first and took cash. The old saying, "Cash talks", proved true in this case. I realized a 20% savings with cash-in-hand. I also picked up the six boxes of ammo that were at two other LGS's.

Since I am old and need reading glasses, I can't use the iron sights. I need to get some optics for it. I was thinking of the DNZ one piece scope base with integral rings and Cabelas' Lever Evolution scope designed for the 45-70 gov't. I know it is a low end scope but I like the idea of crosshairs for 100 and 200 yards. What do you guys think of that? Do you have other suggestions? The multiple crosshairs on the leopold and nikon scopes look so "busy" to me.

Congratulations on picking up a fine rifle, Dan. You are going to enjoy it, I do believe. Scoping a rifle is a matter of personal taste. I've scoped quite a few lever guns, and I tend toward optics in the 1.5-4.5 and 2-8 power range. The scopes are about right for the range of those rifles. Otherwise, I hunt by Braille.

Congrats DAN! Way to go buddy! Welcome to the 458 lever gun club!

I put a 1.25x4 on mine cause it is a 200 yard rifle for me. I just use a larger bull when shooting further.

I think your really going to like it. Pictures of it are a must!

When is your break in range day?

I am afraid that the first shooting will be a couple of weeks or more away. I need to get rings and a scope for it. It may take a few days for me to make up my mind on just what I want. Of course, then I have to order it and wait for delivery.

I am sure you'll get it tuned in nicely Dan. The DNZ's are nice as are the WWG mounts, along with Warne and a few others. Nothing wrong with a Weaver rail and good Warne or Leupold rings either..

I don't recognize the term "WWG" mounts. I don't think you are referring to either Warne or Weaver are you?

Wild West Guns has a Beauty shop in Las Vegas I was in it last march and had a tour ! RJ

Yesterday I went over to Penn Yan yesterday to help my friend who had flash flood damage at his Keuka Lake house from last weeks flash floods. On the way I remember I would be going by a hidden little local gun shop. It is located behind a auto repair garage. The owner runs both businesses and has been expanding the gun shop business through the years. I stopped in and checked his ammo inventory. Lo and behold he had two boxes of the 450 Marlin ammo in the 350 gr. FP. I picked them up and saw that the boxes looked very old and were of a design I had never seen. I am thinking they were from the first run of ammo produced for the 450 Marlin and had been sitting on this guy's shelf since then.

I am now up to four boxes of the 325 gr. FTX ammo and four boxes of the 350 gr. FP ammo. I did touch round off out the back door Friday to see what the recoil was like. I would say it was a bit less than a 12 gauge slug.

Bases and scope are ordered and delivery is expected for Wednesday. Yahoo!

160 rounds of factory loads and then brass should keep you going for quite a while. I bet the owner was happy to finally move that ammo :)

I'll say. Some years ago, I picked up 200 rounds of 250 grain .356 ammunition. The store was only too happy to cut me a deal as they were unable to move the ammunition. I still have a couple of boxes of that ammo, as almost all I've shot in the last twenty years are handloads.

NYDAN - welcome to the .458 Club  I have a 45-70 Gov in a 1895g with a 2.5-8 Bushnell and the 450 Marlin is in a BLR with a 2-7 Leupold. I like both rifles and cartridges ! RJ

Some bullets i shoot out of my 450 Marlin BLR rifle ! The loaded one is a 500 Interbond !
I can load the 500 IB in the BLR rifle - all i had to do was remove the mag blocker for the extra lenght - there is still plenty of room in the chamber throat . I can fit more powder with out compressing it so much too ! So really what it is with this load is a 458 Win Mag 2" ! RJ

l-r is 400 Speer- 405 Rem - 420 Bullet Barn - Horn 500 Interbond - 525 Bear Tooth Pile Driver - Home cast 540 gr :)

Rem Jim, those are some awesome looking bullets. I can't wait to see how mine shoots with the factory loads I have.
