54987 for the .270

I'd say you are indeed in business. Not many animals will feel safe when you have that rifle and load with you. Find shooting, Trevor.

Hi Trevor that is as nice a group as I have seen with the 270win. and I have been loading that caliber for just about 40 years.
If you won't mind advising me what is the powder charge and OAL. I think this old fellow might be doing some tuning
I know that I will have to work up the charge but that is half the fun.
This is one old dog that is willing to learn a new trick.
PS. I have been using the ABs for last number of years and have shot a number of Elk & Moose with 130s. With that accuracy and confidence you will have no trouble lad

Blessings,
Dan

Nothing wrong with any of those cartridges you named. The big issue will be what you plan to hunt, I should think.

In all honesty, my dad pretty much took care of every thing I plan to hunt when he gave me a Model 70 .30-06 for my 13th birthday. I've no huge desire to hunt the big bears or other dangerous game. It's not that I wouldn't like to do it, it's just that I don't see it as being a priority in the future. I think a .338-06 would fill the biggest gap in my collection, but it will be some time before I will have the opportunity to chase the country's larger ungulates. The .25-06 will likely be next for this reason. It is both more useful in terms of the hunting I do now and easier to come by.

All of this could easily change should I come across the right deal on any of the -06 family members I'm missing. A good price on a No. 1 in 35 Whelen or a Mark V .338-06... or even a nice 8mm-06. Only the 6.5-06 is really safe from being my next purchase. I'm pretty well decided that it will be the last I add to my collection as I'm fairly determined to make it a full custom rifle and I won't have the money for that for some time.

Nice work with the O'Connor special! Those are bragging groups. I'm with you, love the 06 family. I'm working on building a pair a 280AI and 338AI or 35AI. If you ever get to that it may be cool to go with the 6.5-280AI that would be a sweet rig.

Trevor, my 130 AB's are also loaded to 3.340. I will have to mess the seating depth for sure now. I am not near as fast ( 49.5 of IMR4064) but they don't group for anything right now.

Great load development and shooting. JOC is smiling.

The charge for these is 61.0 gr. RL-22 with a COAL of 3.305". I bumped the charge up from 60.5 grains because I thought the cold weather was responsible for the lower velocity I was getting with the AB. Turns out the BT just flies faster than the AB. I'm getting the same MV with the BT at 28 deg F that I was at 80 deg F.

That BT load is screaming! Hard to not like anything there. Nice shooting and load work.

Thanks, CC. Reloader 22 is really something in the .270.

Thanks. I gave some thought to the 6.5-280AI. Have you seen a source for dies.. or reamers for that matter? Really, I think the regular 6.5-06 would be enough of a screamer for me, the the 6.5-280 AI would certainly be cool.

Pat, let us know how it works out for you. I certainly wouldn't be afraid to try some RL-22. I know I've been impressed with it.

Oh Crud. Now I am going to have to try some of that new fangled RL22

I don't think I have ever used anything other than IMR 4350 or 4064 in any of my big game rifles.

Stand by for heavy waves! RL22 is the HEAT in my 270WSM and 7WSM.. Fast and very accurate... Love it.

I belive Redding makes dies for it not 100% sure. But Pac-Nor has a reamer for that sitting on the shelf. And the best part would be having good brass that all you have to do is neck size.
