Hi all;
May not be the forum for it but reloading and accuracy are going to directly effect the purchase.
FWIW, I have an itch for something in this caliber and am going to scratch it. Now all I need to do is decide which of the choices to go for.
Uses: Who knows? Just decided I need the gun, not what it's for.
Choices: 264 mag, 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5 swede, , 260 Rem, and I am certainly open to any other thoughts.
This is a slot I haven't owned before but haved wondered about. Probably be more of a deer sized critter usage as there are quite a few other bigger boomers in the rack although I do have the tendency to get captivated by certain calibers.
I figured this group probably represents a darn big cross-section of usages and experience, thus this post.

264 mag, 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5 swede, , 260 Rem,

Those are each a great choice, and they will work very well for deer sized game. Undoubtedly, many people have taken elk with the 264 WM and I hunted for a while with a friend that dropped a moose right smartly with his 6.5 X 55 (as is surely the case in Sweden and Finland). Nevertheless, each has gained, or in gaining, excellent reputations for accuracy in the appropriate platform. The 260 Rem was developed for long-distance competition, as was the 6.5 Creedmore. This certainly speaks to the issue of accuracy. On the other hand, the 6.5-284 has gained a good reputation in the realm of accuracy. Those who own them have never dissed the 264 WM nor the 6.5 X 55 as lacking in that department. Now comes the hard work, deciding what you want. Do you intend to build or buy a factory rifle. If you intend to purchase a factory rifle, you will be buying as much on the basis of your view of a given manufacturer as on the basis of the cartridge. If you build, you can select whatever action you desire and start from there. Any of these cartridges will do the job you ask.

the older i get, the more i lean towards smaller calibers.... I'd pick the 260 rem.

but it's hard to argue with a 264wm......

In this case, you may want to let the type of rifle pick it's own cartridge.

example: a lightweight, short barreled, mountain rifle would lend itself to the 260 rem class.

a heavier, long barreled, bench type rifle would lend itself to the win mag class.

things like recoil and barrel life also weigh in on the decision. In any case, all the 6.5's are impressive ballistically!!!

See, that's exactly why I asked.
You guys are great.
More info.
Doc, probably factory for now....although a build your own does intrigue me. Geez, another decision.
Chet, good point on the size and weight determining what to get. I am not real recoil sensitive (I'm 6'4" 220) but if one really wallops me then I guess I could get that way
Hmmmmmm.

None of the cartridges you list are particularly vicious. Recoil should not be a factor. Make certain you put a good recoil pad on the rifle (Pachmayr Decelerator and LimbSaver are each excellent), tweak the trigger to a crisp, clean break and wear good hearing protection to avoid the dreaded flinch. Size means nothing in developing a flinch.

I would go with 6.5X55 with 8 twist and shoot 130-140 Accubonds or a TTSX for everything short of moose.

The 26 cals are very impressive, both in down range performance on game and on paper.
For deer size game, why not just go with a 260 Rem. If you want something different and better for long range out to 1000 yds, try the 6.5-284.
Nosler offers the 6.5-284 in their M48.

yup, range can be a factor as well.......

deer out to 500 yards: Kimber 84M 260rem
deer and elk to 500 yards: 26" med-heavy barreled 264wm or 6.5/284

and I wouldn't call you a fool if you hunted moose with it either

I'm 6'5" 250...... and I flinch more than most!! 8)

Barrel life will be MUCH LONGER with the 260 or 6.5X55 than it will be with the 264 Win mag or the 6.5-284. I have a sported Mauser 96 Swede in 6.5X55 and it is very accurate and it is a deer killer even way out there. I also have a 264 Win mag custom built Rem 700 action Shilen barrel 27 3/4" long and it hums a 130 AB 3350 fps. It is a deer killer waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out there. If I were going to purchase a factory rifle I would look at a Savage bolt rifle and I am pretty sure that they are making one in 6.5X55 now. Teki (SP?) makes one also. With the 6.5X55 you will have a much better selection of ammo if you don't reload over the 260 rem. If you hand load and have a 24" or so barrel you can load a modern action 6.5X55 rifle to almost match the 6.5-06 which is very close to what you can get out of a 264 Win mag with a 24" barrel. If you want a 264 Win mag Rem makes the sendero with a 26" barrel with a fluted SS barrel and they are shooters. If you choose a 264 Win mag DO NOT SETTLE FOR A BARREL LESS THAN 26". You loose a lot of zip when you drop down to a 24" barrel and gain a bunch of muzzle blast.

For the 264 mag the AB or Partition bullets are the trick. But for the 6.5X55 on deer I really like the 120 ballistic tips. My rifle has the military 29" barrel and with safe under 46.000 cup loads it will do 3000 fps. It shoots flat and hammers deer.

Great caliber choice you have chosen to look at -

All great sugestions above - If you're looking to purchase something off the shelf, I'd imagine the .260, .264, & 6.5sweed will be the easiest to get your hands on. Remington has done a pathetic job of keeping the .260 alive, so your only choice from them right now in a "new" offering is the Model 7.
I've never owned a Savage, however they have just chambered I belive 4 or 5 models into the .260 w/ 1:8 twist barrel. They also offer the 6.5x284 which may be the compromise round between the larger 264 / 6.5Mag ( the original short mag I might add ) and the .260 size cartridge.
As above - Tikka chambers the 6.5 sweed w/ a 1:8 twist barrel - this all maybe a moog point if you want to keep your bullet selection @ 130gr and lower.

If you want something completely different and want to build it -
6.5 X 47 Lapua, 6.5-06 or even the AI version of the 6.5-06

I doubt one can go wrong with any of the 6.5's - let us know what you decide on.

Oh so many choices. I like the 6.5 Swede because of the cool factor and that it will match the 260 Remington in a modern rifle with handloads. One that would have great ballistics and reach out there without reaching back and slapping you around would be the 6.5-06. Very simple to run 25-06 cases over an expander ball and you are all set to reload. The ballistics in a 24" barrel are not far behind the 264 WM either!

I think I would go with the 6.5-06 as 25-06 brass is easy to find and ballistically it's a very well balanced cartridge. The 130gr. AccuBond would be superb! OH so many choices.

I am still on the hunt for a 6.5 myself and have kinda looked at the 6.5WSM and the 6.5/06. I am trying to stay away from belted stuff. I really think the 6.5-06 would be a great cartridge and really versatile I think. Good luck choosing! There are a bunch of good ones! Scotty

6.5-06 130 gr. Nosler AccuBond in a 24" barrel. The newest Nosler book #6 lists the highest velocity with that bullet at 3151 fps with Viht N560 powder and 3121 fps with RL22.

264 WM 130 gr. Nosler AccuBond in a 24" barrel. The same Nosler book lists the highest velocity with that bullet with RL22 at 3166 fps and IMR7828 at 3153 fps!

Unless you want a 26" barrel there's no need to get the 264 WM as you won't gain anything over the 6.5-06. Barrel life will be longer with the 6.5-06 over the 264 WM and it will have greater ballistics over the other 6.5's save for the 6.5-284 which is almost identical to it in that catagory, and the 6.5-06 should be as accurate as any of them.

Man, need to start looking for a donor rifle to build! Great info 6mm! Plus, cases would be CHEAP compared to the others and you could use Nosler 30-06/270 brass to make it. Scotty

Well couple months back I stumbled into a 28 inch, stainless, fluted #4 contour barrel at Mcgowen Precision. It was a 6.5 bore 1/8 twist and unchambered.
They wanted a whopping $90.00 for the barrel.

It's now a 264 Win Mag screwed into a squared and lapped Rem 700 Magnum action.

All of my whitetail hunting is done from elevated stands and shots can be anywhere from point blank to as far as I want to shoot. After looking at the ballistics of the 6.5 bore I figure it oughta be a very capable, long range deer thumper with 130-140 grain bullets.

I have a jones now for a 6.5 Grendel upper for my AR as well.

Keep us posted on your decision.

Howard

Howard, that sounds like a primo long range rifle for sure. Still need to get that 6.5 for my safe. It has been alluding me for quite awhile. Scotty

Wow! Terrific stuff.
I want you guys to know you now have me convinced that I am completely befuddled.
I have a 25-06 that I love and having all that brass kind of leads me to lean toward 6.5-06. Sounds like that should be easy to work with.
Man. All these choices are really cool, though.
Under the "there is no such thing as too many rifles" thought....it may end up that two in this bore may be needed.
anyhow, many thanks!
