Ok, so here's what I'm working on. I have a Mauser 98 action and looking to build a 6.5x47 lapua. I think I'm going to go with a Krieger barrel in a remington varmint contour stainless steel, finished at 26" with a 1:8.5 twist. I'm debating on if I want it fluted or not....I think if it was the same price either way I'd probably have it fluted but I'm not sure an extra $125 is worth it? My smith wants me to have them rough chamber it which they will do for an extra $40. I'll probably put it a Bell & Carlson medalist stock, but I'm also considering a thumbhole stock. And since I'm having a bit of a wild hair and wanted to do something different, I'm considering adding a suppressor to it rather than a muzzle brake. Cost is a factor as they get pretty pricey for the bigger calibers but it would be really fun for varmint hunting and just general shooting!

So here's what I'm looking at for cost....

Krieger barrel: $295 + 15 S&H= $310 (+125 if I have it fluted...)
Rough chamber: $40
Stock: $250ish
Finish chamber, thread and install: $150-200

So I'm looking at about $800 into it before any optics and minus a suppressor or brake......is that about normal? This is the first rifle I've built from the action up so I'm just checking. I've got about $600 saved up so far so I'm a few months away from getting it done but thought I'd start gathering parts and what not. I figured I should probably at least get my barrel ordered as that seems to be the longest delay in the process. What am I missing/overlooking?

Anyone have any experience with suppressors on larger calibers? This would be my first and I've done a bit of looking but I'm a newb when it comes to them....so I'm open to suggestions.

Oh, and I plan on shooting the 120-130 grain bullets out of it. Probably 123 grain SMK's or 130 grain Bergers for punching paper and maybe the 120 grain ballistic tip for yotes and what not and the 130 grain AccuBond for deer/antelope. Depending on what it likes to shoot of course....

shoots,

Gotta say I'm a little jealous as I'm looking really hard at the same caliber - just having issues deciding which action I want to use.

It's going to be a darn if you do, darn if you don't situation if you decide on the brake or not -
I have a .260 built on a Rem 700 action with a 25in Remington Varmint Contour that is very pleasant to shoot. Actually much less recoil than my 7-08 in the same configuration. A 26in tube should keep it plenty calm?
I'd use some caution as well if you plan on putting alot of rounds down range at one time with the brake - choose mfg's carefully. I can attest to the Vias being a good option to keep the blast away from the shooter.

All three of those bullets would be great options as well as the Lapua Scenars. My .260 shoots the 100gr B-tip and 130gr A-bonds / VLD's extremely well.

Let us know what you choose
