Will a 1-14 twist handle the 60GR. Nosler- the barrel is 26" Any thoughts? I've been shooting 55's, but wondered if 60Gr. was do able.

Jay,

The 60 gr BT is too long to reliability stabilize in a 1:14 twist.
I have a M700 VLS that shoots the 50 gr and 55 gr BT sub .5 MOA. I tried the 60 gr BT and the groups looked like this-

baltz526,

What charge weight of H414 did you use and what size groups did you achieve?

groups under 1" my load data is out in the shop. but i use CCI250 primers and near max load of H414. i killed a couple deer with the 60gr Partition. it worked good at longer range, but up close the front blew up then the back acted like a solid

Jay, save yourself some grief and do not even try it. I have a number of .224 caliber rifles and none of them will shoot the 60 grain Nosler offerings, not even the ones with 1 in 12 twists.

I have even had trouble getting the 55 grain Ballistic Tips to stabilize in 1 in 14 inch twist rifles chambered in 22-250 Remington. When the 55 grain BT's first came out I had to try them. They shot very poorly. I called Nosler and they admitted they were on the ragged edge for stability. They asked what elevation I was shooting at, and I replied about 300 feet above sea level. They replied that above 3000 feet they would stabilize.
I took some to South Dakota to shoot prairie dogs at about 3500 ft elevation and they shot fine.

I simply went back to the 50 grain Ballistic Tips and have never looked back. They shoot great!

The 60 grain Nosler Partitions shot VERY poorly in several rifles I tried them in. I am talking about groups so bad I did not even bother to measure them!

OK, I guess it's a no on the 60's. then. The gun loves 55's and 39.5Grns. H-380. I just thought a heavier bullet would be better in the wind. Thanks.

this may be why i got pretty good results. my house is at 4300' elevation. where i sighted in is about 4500' and where i have killed deer is 3500' to 5500' in elevation

The longer/heavier bullets will shoot better in the wind - if your barrel has a fast enough twist to stabilize them.

Most factory .22-250's have that slow 1:14 twist and perform superbly with 50 grain varmint bullets, but don't always handle the heavier bullets well. Dad's Remington was spraying 55 grainers all over the target, and they were starting to go sideways on him...

I got him to load up some lighter 52 grain Matchkings with a stout load of H-380 and suddenly the rifle was a true one-holer. Amazing accuracy. That thing is dead nuts accurate at close and far ranges. A superb varmint rifle.

When you burn out that factory barrel, and one good varmint season can do that, consider a fast-twist Lilja or Krieger... Those things will stabilize a long, heavy bullet and turn your .22-250 into an extraordinary long range performer. A buddy of mine shoots 80 grain Sierras through his Lilja barreled rifle, and it's a 1:8 twist as I recall. Phenomenal performance...

I am at 1000' elevation which I'm sure contributes to the shotgun pattern groups with the 60 gr BT. Guy is spot on and I plan on re barreling my 700 VLS with a fast twist Hart barrel when the time comes.

I was a little concerned with my Howa 22-250 and 60gn PT. I was lucky and they shoot just fine. :? I haven't had the time to "fine-tune" the load. The 55gn BT w/H322 32gns actually shoots sub moa out of the 20" barrel. I shot out to 440yds and the two holes were about 2.5" apart. I'll be leaving these loads alone and working on a 270WSM, 300WSM and a 7MM STW this spring.

I get <1" 3shot groups out of my sporter weight Model 70 22-250 with 1 in 14" twist when shooting the 60 grain Partition @ 3600 fps.

Can't really complain about that!
