I posted about my new 6mm Remington Ruger #1B
Just a little update for those who did,nt read it.
Bought it last weekened, did an informal shoot off the hood of my truck and was prety impressed.
Took it to the range this morning, and it was quite good, but not as good as i had hoped.
1st thing I noticed, was how much optics have improved in the last 20 some odd years. The rifle came with a VariX2 3X9 of unknown vintage.
The rifle is from 1981 so that a clue anyway. Of coures its a leupold and a good reliable scope.
But When I compared it to my VXIII 2.5X8 there was an obvious difference.
Anyway, I had 3 loads for the 6mm.
Pops load of 48 grs of RL-22 behind a 95 gr balistic tip was not to good.
Avaraged about 2 inches.
Then i tried some factory Winchester 100 grain power points.
Got an avarage for 3, 3 shot groups of 1.47. An there was one bullet that really skewed the avarage. The Avarage without the 1 bad shot was about an inch and an 8th.
My last load was a 95 gr Partition over 45.0 grs of IMR-4831.
Got a good dear load now.
The 3 shots I fired off my hood at 93 yards a few days back gave me a group of .28.
Today 3,3 shot groups gave me an avarge of .87.
need to chrony that one but I bet its someplace in the 3200 Ball park from a 26 inch tube.
On the way home i bought some 85 gr Barnes t shocks and a can of IMRs new 4007 SSC.
That should be interesting.
My old JC higgins 30,06 custom, it has a timney trigger and is custom bedded in am MPI stock, gave me a fine hunting load.
I tried the 165 grain balistic tips over 57.5 grains of IMR 4350 last week but my groups ran about 1.5 inches. Chrony was good at 2907.
So this week i switched to the hornady 165 grain flat base under the same charge. Avarged 1.20.
And that was very consistant. I think that will be my load for that rifle this year, deer and elk...tj3006
