I was wondering if some of you guy's could school me on the 7-30 waters ?

Thanks,

I've got one in a contender pistol. Fun, very accurate ....ez to make brass out of 3030.
Shoots bullets from 120 to 154 very accurate. 1.5" groups all day long at 100 w/a 2.5-8 Leu on top.
Muzzle break is built in...awful loud.
I always thought I wanted a single shot rifle....kinda got one by mistake. Bought a cva scout rifle in 708. Found out it was a vertical stringer till I loaded it down to about 45k pressure....now its accurate as I could ask for. My 708 wound up ballistically a 7-30! Blued cva's are being found under $200....I got a stainless for $295.

Ken Waters developed and promoted this cartridge about forty years ago. It allowed for somewhat better ballistics out of the 30-30 parent case in a Model 94. I regret that I failed to snag one of the production models Winchester produced in the mid-80s. It would have been a great little rifle to work with. I just sold off the last of my 139 grain Hornady FN bullets that were designed for this cartridge. I have to ask, do you have a lead on one of these fine rifles?

DrMike,

I thought about putting a contender rifle together for next deer season.

That could be quite a nice firearm; it would allow you to shoot spitzers.

The scout might not have the "cool factor" but I really like it. Nice fit and finish. Decent trigger.
The load I settled on for mine is 37 grains varget under blem 160 accubonds. (708) They come out at 2300 fps.
My final load testing at 200 had 12 shots covered by a dollar bill that was folded over length wise. Should be good enough for any deer I'll see.
Pretty economical shooting....gun priced right too.

Downside is getting them across the border. I can't even export to the USA a Model 94 I'm trying to give away to a friend. Homeland Security is mighty sticky about rifles coming from the US, and ATF is mighty sticky about rifles going into the US.

All shipments must go through licensed brokers. I can purchase from a US entity, but then arrange for shipment through a brokerage that has been approved by DHS. It adds significantly to the cost. Shipping the other direction has to run through ATF, and they are less than helpful. We in Canada cannot purchase directly rifle scopes or spotting scopes, rifle magazines, barrels, actions, firearms, etc. We cannot purchase brass or bullets directly. Everything must be under control of the US government. to purchase rifles, I can work through licensed US exporters wiling to file the paperwork and through Canadian importers who are prepared to file the paperwork and still purchase firearms. Effectively, it can make such purchases prohibitive. It is much better for us to purchase new firearms through importers. DHS is keeping you safe from Canadians, even while opening the doors on the southern border. :?

That's exactly what I thought when I was reading your post. Seems nuts to me.
