7 Mag pressure issues

I'm loading for my Savage 7 Mag. Using 160 accubonds, Fed G215M primers, winchester brass, and Accurate RL 22 at 66 grains. Got this load a while ago never had issues, accurate as all get go. Ran out of that lot of powder then my problems started.

New lot and I was blowing primers on brand new brass. can't load over 62 grains. Even at 62 grains I'm blowing primers, sticking cases. At 59 grains I'm still getting ejector marks. Not sure whats going on. Bullets are not in the lands. Any ideas? Bad lot of powder?

Corey

I've read that RL22 is known to vary quite a big from lot to lot. A lot of guys love RL22 but I will suggest changing powders.

I'm with the other guys. Really love the rifle, but this is driving me crazy. Any ideas on a powder?

Corey

Just read Gerry's old post and 4350 seems to work well in 7RM but haven't tried it yet since the rifle is still being built.

Reloader 26 will work great as well. Alliant has data on 160AB with RL 26 on their site as well.

I'm not so sure I want to stick with AA powders. I need the consistency.

Corey

If you like RL22....buy an 8 lb jug and work your load up again. 8 lbs should last you a while.

RL26 is NOT RL22 by any stretch, very consistent from lot to lot. I have seen the same thing other powder manufacturers also, it is why standard practice is to back down and load back up to previous speed ANY time you switch lot #'s.......

Nosler's own load data shows max at 63 grains with RL22 and 160AB to begin with so all your seeing is a fast lot and a slow lot.

RL22 does not offer enough case fill to be my powder of choice anyway with 160 grainers, like mentioned by others switch powders or rework loads.

You didn't mention velocity difference in the lot #'s.

I guess I should clarify. I did drop down with the new lot of powder worked up to 62 grains and had to stop. Thought that was safe until it started showing pressure signs. Well I guess I'll see if I can find some RL26 and give it a try. I just can't believe there can be so much difference from lot to lot. I knew there would be some but no this much.

I have been loading for 2 different 7mm mags for many years using 160gr. Accubonds & 215M primers. Both shoot right around .5moa & are traveling just over 3000fps I use IMR4350 powder & have never had trouble with pressure.
Just letting you know this works for us.

Blessings,
Dan

Burnt a lot IMR4831 and IMR4350 in the 7RM as well and will give excellent accuracy, the only reason I switched to RL 26 is my temperature related velocity swings with RL 26 has shown to be about half what the IMR's do for me.

RL23 might not be too bad either.

Lots of good powders for the 7 mag. H1000 seems to work real well for me these days.

I'd love to try H-1000 but it's so hard to find. I did find some RL26 yesterday and I'm going to give that a try next week. My fingers are crossed.

Corey

Been a while since I've been on here. But those that are using H1000 what is your recipe, if you don't mind sharing. I finally found two pounds of it to try out yesterday.

Corey

RL-22 does have large swings from lot to lot. If you know your velocity with the old lot drop back with the new lot and increase the charge until you hit the same velocity, it could be several grains less to equal the same speed and accuracy.
