Got a 7 Rem Mag here, 24" barrel, and want to do a ladder with the 180g ELDM, H1000, Retumbo, and RL25. If anyone cares to run the QL on it, be much appreciated! Thanks.

Howdy!

You might find some of the info you need under the QL Request board.

Hope this helps.

I can't help you with quickload but if you search for my older posts, I've done some load work up in 7 rem mag with H1000. I believe there's even some quickload data in the post? My experience was that the manuals are quite a bit lower on their max loads than what I was able to go up to.

I have to agree with you about the reloading manuals being needlessly low on maximum load data.
The 7mm Rem Mag is shot in the same made rifles that shoot the .300 Win Mag, and that has a higher max load rate than the 7mm Rem Mag.
Also, with the new magnum powders available on the market, the velocities can be upped quite well and stay around the low max loads of the 7mm Rem Mag.

That's where the data crosses the max psi set for the simulation. 60,000 psi in this case...

So do you do a run just to get an idea then pick that crossover base charge or is there another way. I am trying to improve my knowledge of QL

You set the max psi desired for the simulation in QL. I would start your load development well below that. If you're just trying to find where you're going to run into pressure signs while shooting, I have loaded 1 round in .5 or 1 grain increments up to max and usually a few notches above. If you find ejector marks on the brass, excessively flattened or cratered primers then don't shoot any higher in your progression. If you get a sticky bolt, stop immediately and back down several grains!

The idea is to find accuracy, but if I'm not even close to the velocity I'm expecting than I don't waste any more time or components. Once I know where my true max load is, I back down a few grains and start shooting groups while working my way back up to my max established load.

The maximum chamber pressure for SAAMI standards is 61K psi. I set the upper chamber pressure to match the SAAMI standard, or adjust that upper pressure if deliberately choosing to go higher. Seldom does an increase in chamber pressure over SAAMI standards translate into significantly higher velocities, but there may be reason to make such a choice. Then, I run a "charge variation" simulation. I select the initial charge weight from years of experience and some understanding of the burn rate of the powder. Reviewing what is projected, I am able to suggest a maximum charge with that powder from the data base. I then run this charge. All this assumes that I have set all the parameters that must be set. Cartridge length, barrel length, MAP, and Maximum
Case Capacity are all preset, but all can be adjusted to your parameters. Measurement of the chamber, using deoxygenated water to measure for Maximum case capacity, and whatever other considerations are them plugged into the system and the data run. This is, of course, an abbreviated summation of what is required. Trust that is helpful.

Thanks Dr. Mike. I have played with QL for a long time, I pick SAAMI and don't mess with the MAP.
I was just curious how you selected the center powder.
Thanks again

I’m getting 2961 fps from my 7mm RM with the 175gr ELD-X over 66.2 grains of RL25. The max safe load from the Hornady 10th Edition. No pressure signs in Federal brass using Federal LRM primers, 5R 1:8 rifled 26” bbl. I haven’t done any formal accuracy testing yet but it gave a hair less than an inch at 200 yards for 3 shots. This was shot at the end of the X-Caliber recommend break in for the new barrel, so the velocity may change a little. These are rounds 19-21 from the barrel. 7631A8CF-A696-4851-AA79-4390A489D0D3.jpeg

*REMEMBER* A safe max load with one powder lot can be transformed to a proof load with a different powder lot. **Always pay attention and work to a max load**

QL was pretty dead on with H1000...69g is where I stopped and was getting 2928fps. Still working on it... Not sure the factory savage twist is enough to give the best accuracy. Shot 66-69 at 300 yards the last 2 mornings and been getting anywhere from 1-2 MOA. I'm going to try a few seated deeper tomorrow, and if that doesnt work, I'll be doing a ladder with Retumbo and RL25, hopefully they can do quite a bit better than H1000 from this rifle. Goal is 2" or better. Best so far was 68g yesterday, which gave me a 2.8" group at 2890fps. But then I tried 68g again this morning, just seated .010" longer and it went to a 7" group...Might be hard to read the target, but they're marked with the charge on each shot, the circled holes were from today, and the holes with cross Mark's were from yesterday. A lot of them are doing 2 and 1 out. And from looking at the target, it doesnt seem to like them close to the lands any...Yesterday I did 67-69g at .025" off and today I did 66-68g at .015" off.

H1000 is pretty good in my Savage 7 mag, but I put a Shilen barrel on it with a 1 in 8 twist and its throated long. I get a little over 3000fps out of the 26" barrel.

I'm gonna have to drop down to the 162s. This 9.5 twist just isnt going to do it. I think the 162s will be a lot more consistent. So if anyone cares to run the QL with the 162 ELDM and H1000/Retumbo/RL25 thatd be great!!!
