7mm mag loads for H870 and AA8700

This stuff (H870) is what I used for many years in the 7MM RM with 175 grainers. Lots of elk bit the dust with both 160 and 175 loads. Mine bullets were the old dual core Speer Grand Slams at 80 gr for the 160 and 78 for the 175's. I still have a couple of jugs of the 870, marked at $4.50 a lb if my memory serves me right. Nobody had chronograghs in those days, but I did chrono the 175 load when I got my first Oehler 35P at 2950 fps. Muzzle blast from this load also burnt some paint off the hood of my pickup and cracked a windshield!

wc872 I honestly think is slower that H870 or 8700, in my stw with a 160 hodgdon calls for a max load of 90 gr. I maxed out at 95 gr of wc872, my velocity was higher but I have a longer barrel, at 96 gr I had just a slighly heavy bolt. My guess is its too slow for a 7mm RM.

Gents, I finally got around to utilizing my Wideners WC 867 powder on the 7mm Rem Mag. I used 150gr JSP projectiles and loaded 2 each of 76gr, 77gr, and 78gr (based on the H870 reload data which is 74 min to 79 max). I suspect that my WC 867 is yet slower than H870 but I'm not sure so I'll report back with velocities vs. performance, probably the first part of Feb.

As an update, all 3 loads above shot very well with the 77gr being my favorite. The 78 gr's recoil is hursh! All loads were accurate as hunting loads and the powder proved clean burning, absolutely no residue in the action or barrel. I did not measure velocities, that'll be next.

H870 always treated me well; I have no doubt that you will find the WC867 will serve you well.

It appears to be the case Mike, any other calibers you've used it with success (308, 6.5x55, 7.5x55, 8mm.....)?

I no longer have most of my older records. I did use some H870 in the 30-06 and in the 280 quite a few years ago, but concluded that faster powders were superior for the case volume. I now have a dwindling supply, so it is reserved for the 7RM. That is a shame as I would like to try it on some of the other cartridges, especially since I secured QL some years back.

I would love to try it with the 264, but I'm keeping what little I have for back up.
