Hi-

I am new to the forum. I have found a lot of great info here and was hoping to get some more. I am reloading for my 7mm Rem Mag using the old Partition gold 160gr moly free bullets. I had them loaded up with h1000 and got good accuracy out of a 24" Sako a7. Velocity was right around 2900 fps. I tried RL23 and got amazing results with 64.5 gr. It's pushing the 160gr at about 3020 fps.

This has been consistent with 2 lots of RL23 and I have no pressure signs with this round.

Because of the limited info on RL23 I was wondering if anyone could let me know if those numbers seem reasonable? Thanks in advance

Tim

Tim,

Welcome aboard. You're well within safe pressure limits according to QL. A readout looks as follows:

Code:
Cartridge : 7 mm Rem. Mag.(SAAMI)
Bullet : .284, 160, Nosler PartGold 52150
Useable Case Capaci: 74.317 grain H2O = 4.825 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.290 inch = 83.57 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Powder : Alliant Reloder-23 *C *T

Results caused by ± 10% powder lot-to-lot burning rate variation using nominal charge

Your velocity is slightly elevated according to this projection, but doesn't appear to be generating serious pressures. Your velocity would be consistent with a maximum chamber pressure of 64,000 PSI. While that is above SAAMI standards, it is still less than maximum chamber pressure allowed for a 270 win. There are several reasons why velocity is slightly higher than expected; but overall, your firing system appears to be safe.

Again, welcome aboard. Trust you will enjoy your time with us.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! Hopefully the real test will come in WY in October.

Thanks again

Tim

Dr Mike beat me to it but just to tag onto his info.

Not the Partition but Speer is showing 64.2 gr's max with RL 23 and 160 gr bullet at 2946.

Alliant shows 65.1 gr's max with RL 23 and Speer's 160 gr BTSP at 3001.

I can't speak for 7mm Speers, but in 30 caliber they always run a tad behind other bullets in velocity with the same powder charges. Given all those numbers I'd say you're right in the ball park especially since you've already been there done that, without running into pressure.

Welcome to the forum. Your loads look fine to me as well and appear to be safe. Good luck on your Wyoming hunt this fall.

Hey everyone. We're on our way back from Wyoming. Landed a big mule deer, buck antelope and doe antelope with the round in this post. Mule deer was at 335yards and dropped in his tracks. Buck antelope the same at 375 yards and the doe was at 250.

Ill upload some pics when I figure out how. Thanks to everyone for the feedback. The round was flawless.

Thank you

Tim

That is a beautiful harvest of game. Congratulations on some fine hunting. Those beasts will make some some fine table fare this year.

Congrats on some your deer and antelope. Both of those bucks look really good to me!

Excellent! Congratulations on working up a fine handload and using it well while hunting.

CTFlatlander, congratulations on using your load to take some game. That is a double win, particularly at those ranges. I bet it feels rewarding.

I also use Reloder 23 in my 7mmRM.

Dan
