So the thought hits me on my 30 mile drive to work this morning. Remington has pretty much all but discontinued the 7saum.... I can get my hands on a used M700SS. for a builder fairly reasonable...
Question is, can the 7saum case be necked down to a 6.5 ? would it be worth the extra time and quirks ? Possibly a 6.5 Rem Mag on roids ?

Thanks in advance for the input.....

I can't see any advantage over the 7mmSAUM, but then again, there are tons of cartridges out there in use that have no discernable advantages over existing cartridges. It could be done.

Neither can I. I always thought it was going to flop since the WSM's were already established.

Big marketing boo-boo by REM.

PS,

Sure it can be done. There are a few who have gone with the 6.5 WSM.

The big question is barrel life.

PACNOR will chamber a barrel for you in 6.5 WSM, or 6.5 WSSM. There are some great 6.5's out there, and some are doing very well in the long range matches. you may also wish to consider the 6.5x284, 6.5x47 lapua (there is also an improved version), or 6.5 dasher just to name a few great long range 6.5's. Personally, I still like the original 6.5.....that's right, the 6.5 sweed.

My uncle shoots PA groundhogs at long range with a 6.5 SAUM improved. It's barreled on a M700. He makes hits all the way out to 1200 with it using 142 a-max bullets. Would also be a great deer caliber.

Remington already has a 6.5 mag that fits a short action and has reintroduced ammo for it. Since there is good data available for the handloader and both are on the way out makeing brass iffy in the future why bother with a round that likely won`t do anything another won`t?

I agree with A.S. there are already a lot of excellent 6.5 cartridges out there......There is the "cool" factor with a cartridge no one else has too though..........

The 6.5 Rem mag would be worth a look, If you look in the Nosler RG#6 you'll see its just as fast as the 264 WM. I know A guy that has one and he wouldn't trade it for anything.

Thanks for the thoughts and input.... it would be more of a " just cause " or " just to be different " factor than any.....
Of course, there is always the Warden to smuggle it by too......
