Fotis and Hodgeman---------Thank you!

I am told the rifle was made in 1915 and is in good condition. it comes with two boxes of ammo from the 1940's . Which I would prefer not to use.

My son tells me that he has found loaded ammo available from Buffalo Arms and a company called SG Ammo, in Oklahoma

My questions

1. does anybody know anything about SG ammo

2. Does anyone have a receipt for making ammo from scratch for this old girl. If not, could some of you reloading ninja's like Dewey, Cole, Nathan, Fotis, Hodgeman, etc, tell me how you would make ammo for this rifle

and I thank you

Hi April,
I see Midway still sells Lee Pacesetter dies with a shell holder for the 33WCF. While Lee may not be my favorite dies, they normally include recipes. I saw some entrepreneurs willing to sell 33 wcf recipes.
The Hornady has a 200gn FTX which should work in 33WCF velocities.
I’ve gotten recipes from Hornady over the phone for odd cartridges.

Looks as thought cases can be made from 45/70 brass, but unfortunately the 200 grain Hornady Flat Point bullet, the only jacketed bullet suitable for the .33 Winchester of which I am aware, was discontinued around 2002.

Reloading data is still available for the .33 WCF. According to the sixth edition of the Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading the .33 Win. can drive a 200 grain Flat Point bullet with a starting load of 35.1 grains of H4895 powder at a muzzle velocity (MV) of 1700 fps. A maximum load of 45.1 grains of H4895 will drive the same bullet to a MV of 2200 fps, about the same as the old factory loads available at the time? Not sure how fast or slow they were though?

Neat gun April, and IMO the greatest Lever Action ever developed by John Moses Browning or anyone for that matter!

Jamison makes brass periodically for the .33WCF. Might be a bit of a wait, Midway USA lists it as "OK to Backorder"

The only really suitable bullet is the 200gr FTX from Hornady.

I don't know anything about SG ammo...but I'd likely buy some to try as any cartridges (or even components) will be tough to come by.

I’m shocked. Hornady 9th edition, page 536 has recipes for the 33winchester. The test gun is a Winchester model 1886, 24” barrel, 1:12 twist. WLR primer, maxCOL 2.690”, max case 2.105”, case trim length 2.095”
Hornady bullet # 33104, 200gn FTX, Powders listed include H4198 28.0-34.5gn; IMR3031 33.3-40.0,
H4895 35.1-45.1,
Win748 37.1-43.2
IMR 4064 35.1-41.2
Max velocity was H4895 @2200,
Next was 2100 Win748 and IMR3031

SG Ammo is a good company to deal with.

My dad has an 86 in 33 WCF, but we have never shot it.

great information, thank you all

Hodgeman, do you think Alaska Bullet works would/could make the bullet as it appears Cole is correct about the cases. I will suggest Jamison and Midway as well as SG ( thanks 5shot), as well as Buffalo. Mark sent you a pm

shipmates making fun of my "priorities" I have delayed shoving off to Casablanca by a day or two to get this rifle for my son and the rifle I bought in Austria for Cheyenne sorted out. I am obviously a little eccentric in my old age. I was going to buy a nice Shotgun for Hodgeman but it had a wood stock, so I passed, as I knew he would just replace the 70 year old wood stock with a cheap plastic stock. What you kids do to your guns these days makes an old woman cry. Wait, I could get it for Dr Mike, he understands the beauty and feel of a nice wood stock and is not afraid to take the time to care for it properly. Dr Mike, it feels a little weird discussing a 70 year old shotgun and realizing it is younger than we are. I wished I still looked as good as the old shotgun I am discussing

Wow April, that's a bold statement! Your life vs. a firearm or material object? I think you've underestimated yourself maybe?

I woke up this morning thinking about your life, sailing around the various Seas, and Oceans, stepping off to the mainland somewhere elegant in its vast history and beauty! I'd like to know how you do it, what does it take, do you have a crew? I admire your freedom to sail across these waters and visiting all those places along the way!

Those guns will last beyond even my lifetime, but your's is unfolding before you each day, and for that reason you have something greater then just age..... The Wisdom of your Lifetime. So thanks for sharing it with us, and I hope you enjoy thinking about it a second time as much as we do hearing about it!

Don’t Tell Anyone, but SG Ammo is awesome.

great information, thank you all

I wished I still looked as good as the old shotgun I am discussing
why don’t you pull the Bullets/Primer/Powder from the 1940s ammo & reload them?

Oh, yeah, a number of my firearms are more handsome than I. :? That, in itself, is a fascinating subject. Have no idea how that came to be.

Alaska Bullet Works may well be able to tool up for a run. You could also just run cast bullets. No real need for a jacket at the speeds the .33WCF runs at.

Haha...you might be right on the stock. I love a nice piece of walnut, but it breaks my heart to take them for a walk in the woods.

EDIT to add- Hawk bullets lists three .33WCF bullets in FP profile- a 180, 200 and 215. They will also produce bullets to order.

The 33 WCF in the older 1886 rifles prefers 200 gr jacketed bullets. I have four (4) 86 rifles in 33 WCF-
reloaded for them about 30 years. Brass like starline in 40-65 WCF helps as you may resize with
a 33 WCF resizing die. Also helpful is the Lee factory crimp die.
200 gr Hawk-or Hornady bullets work well at 2200 FPS and are accurate. Cast bullets are not recommended
in this caliber-not accurate.
Powders that work are IMR 3031, 4198, 4064. Since these 1886 rifles are 100 yrs old, velocity is best kept to
2100-2275 fps, regardless of what some data may be available. Keep in mind that it is possible to
shoot premium spitzer or round nose bullets in the 1886. One in the chamber with only one in the magazine-or first in magazine..
The Nosler 210 Partition comes in handy if one is in bear country , then extra Hawk cartridges will preserve your bacon.
