Ok, my .35 Whelen is off at the smith's getting properly pillar bedded so I pulled this old mauser from the back of my safe that I bought a few years ago in 8mm-06. It was a barreled action and it was rough but I went ahead and put it back together with an old Bishop stock. I dug out some old targets and saw that 175 grain Sierras and H4895 was shooting pretty well.

It shot well with the max 52.5 grain load by my Sierra manual, but I'm thinking I should push it past this level. I'm sure the rifle is strong enough to handle it as it is a VZ-24. It just seems that at 52.5 grains I'm not using the .30-06 case capacity as I should.

What about a slower powder like IMR/H 4350?

That is the Cadillac of Mausers if its a VZ-24. Read Bolt Action Rifles by Frank da Hass. Great book.

I should get that book, and I haven't read it. The rifle was bubbaed pretty good when I got it but is sound. It isn't a pretty rifle but it is a VZ-24.

Only picture I could find of the rifle, I guess I'll have to take some more next time I'm at the range.
