Anyone have old loading manuals, powder company phamplets, etc that show data for a 147 grain JHP or FMJ bullet in 9 mm with WW231? ( or HP38 as it's same)

I know there's lots of other slower powders out there with data but I have 8 lbs of 231. I m not trying to get max velocity, something in 850-900 fps range. Make a good practice plinking load for me using components and bullets I already have.

Thx for any info or personal experience any of you may have!

From Lyman 48th. Speer 147 TMJ CCI 500 primer. Start load 3.5 gr 231 960fps, 27000 CUP. Max load 4.4 gr 231 1043fps 32000 CUP.

I've also used HP 38 off the books for some specialty loads in .357. There seems to be a very consistent and linear relationship between charges for this powder and charges for titegroup, so some meaningful comparisons can be drawn there.

From Lyman 49th Edition, for some reason they backed off a little. Out of a 4" barrel, Speer 147gr TMJ CCI 500.
Start 3.5gr 231 855 fps, 23,000 CUP. Max 4.1gr 231 957 fps, 27,500 CUP. OAL 1.115"

Thanks much guys! Loaded 3.4 and 3.5 of WW231 with owl of 1.1 to start. Appreciate your help.

I ll also do a little looking at TG to see what data is available for some comparisons. If I can get 850+/- I ll be happy assuming accuracy and functioning good.

The relationship I found, comparing listed data where both appear: Anywhere titegroup is listed, HP 38 is also suitable with a slightly heavier charge. HP38 is "slower" on the burning chart than TG. Assumption, HP 38 should be able to be used anywhere TG is listed with an equal or slightly greater charge weight. Strictly at your own risk of course. The specialty load I was working with was with a very light weight wadcutter bullet in .357. I had .38 data for only TG, and had data for TG and 38 with heavier bullets in .357. Did some interpolation and came up with a peach of a load for youth and recoil shy shooters. The revolver in question for some reason does not shoot .38 ammo very accurately, but really shines with .357 in identical loads. I too have a stash of HP 38 inherited from a bullseye shooter at out club who has passed. Will be switching to TG when it is expended. A very versatile pistol (and reduced rifle) powder.

I have finished load workup with HP38 in 9mm with 124 coated cast. It does fine. Clean, reliable and accurate, but I did get slightly better results with TG.

Thx Polaris!

I ve been loading for right at 50 years, mostly rifle, but I m always cautious especially when data is hard to come by. I ve seen some folks who throw components together like mixing kool aid!!

My copy of the 48th Edition has the same data you posted from the 49th. Maybe a later printing of the 48th than Polaris' ? Wonder why the change sometime during the 48th edition printing.
Curious....

Just revisited my 48th, and noticed the data is identical between 130 gr Speer and 147. Velocity, charge weight, pressure. Me thinks a typo that was corrected in a later printing  . It has now been corrected by removal from my 48th as well. Cut the section right out and burned it. Another reason to always verify every way possible and make sure everything makes sense before proceeding!

Just an FYI for others who might follow this thread. Chronographed my 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5 loads of WW231 under 147 gr JHP.

3.3 was 840 fps avg
3.4 was 865 fps avg
3.5 was 890 ish fps.. only shot a couple of these

For comparison I ran some factory over chronograph
115 FMJ PPU recorded 1100 fps
124 FMJ IMI recorded 1150 fps
147 FN Jacketed R/P 950 fps. (Rated at 990 fps on box)

With the reloads the 3.3 grs of WW231 shot the best group followed by the 3.5 gr charge. Believe it or not there was noticeable recoil increase when moving up a couple of tenths of powder. All reloads cycled the action on my XD9 fine. Want to get a few more rounds downrange with the 3.3 charge but might just stay with that for a mild plinking/target load. Thanks for everyone's help!
