9000 mile road trip

Catherine and I left home, with the dogs, Dec 1. Towed our Airstream all the way. Down through Idaho, Nevada, Southern California into Baja. Ended up in Cabo. Spent Christmas there then started working back up. Stayed in Yuma for a while then worked our way to Vegas for the Safari Club Convention. Hung out in Arizona for a couple of weeks but finally had to head home. Made it home just in time for single digit temps.
Been asked 100 times If I was worried about safety in Baja. To tell the truth Portland causes me more concern. The horror stories about Mexican roads are pretty accurate. Narrow, winding with no shoulders. You don’t spend much time looking for critters and admiring the landscape. It was also rare to get much over 50 mph And a five hour drive was enough to get me looking for a beach to camp on.
I would make the trip again.

That is a heckuva trip. You undoubtedly saw some beautiful country. I do love the shots of the mesas and the cacti. That can be desolate country, but it sure does have its own beauty.

The most important takeaway from the trip was to not push the distance. The roads will wear you out and you absolutely do not want to be setting up camp after dark. Plan on 4 to 5 hours, find your beach about 1500 hours and set up. Life is good.

I agree. Most of us have probably pushed it and driven 8 or 10 or more hours at a time, stopping only for fuel and a quick break... I have done so.

However I greatly prefer limiting the drive time to 4, 5, maybe 6 hours, then spending the rest of the day camping, hiking, fishing... something other than driving. Also, if I can pause for a few days somewhere that I really enjoy, that helps too.

Thanks for sharing the info about your long road trip. I've been on several 2,000 - 5,000 mile trips, but 9,000 miles? That's a long way!

Wise words. I ignored such advice when I was younger, and I missed a lot of beauty. My wife was complaining on one occasion that I was permitted to travel and see so much. I was then travelling on behalf of the school where I taught. I responded, there is nothing to see when you're driving to the next engagement. I see the inside of motels and churches, and they all look alike. We've learned to take time together to simply see and enjoy. Thanks for your insight.
