A 1911 thought...

Introduced two shooters to the all steel .45 1911 on Sunday.

One was a Glock shooter, the other had a 9mm FN. Neither had ever held, let alone fired, a 1911. Each was having a little trouble with accuracy at 25 yards.

Each of them fired the 1911, with only basic "this is how it works" coaching from me.

Each of them produced MUCH better groups on target, at 25 yards, with my 1911, a gun they'd never before held or fired.

Each of them, afterwards, commented on:
Weight - it's heavier than they're used to.
Trigger - neither could believe a handgun could have such a crisp trigger (ought to try a S&W revolver)
Accuracy - they were both pretty pleased and amazed to find out that they could put a full magazine into the 10-ring of a combat-type silhouette target from 25 yards. Something they had not yet accomplished with their own pistols.

I found it interesting to see how well they shot my daily carry pistol - with which they were completely unfamiliar. Perhaps John Browning got it pretty close to right, over 100 years ago?

I worry about some of these guys? I killed a mule deer buck, fast draw from the holster, running, hit him between the ears, from the back at 20 yards with a Browning 9mm High Power, 124 gr JHP. I was taking a leak and dribbled on my boots but I killed that deer dead as a stone at 20 yards while he stotted away and I didn't even use the sights, just Weaver instinct.

I admit that I can't shoot some of these new autos but give me a Colt SAA, Smith or 1911 and all it takes is practice. I am old now and can't shoot in the 290's anymore but with the right gun? It is all about attitude, a little knowledge and practice.

Most people have the impression that a 1911 won't hit the broad side of a barn because of the sloppy military issue models. Give them a well tuned 1911 and watch the smile spread on their face.

Guy, what are your thoughts on a Sig Saur 1911? I shot one a couple years ago and it felt good.

Ya just gotta love the 1911.
I didn't realize 45 ACP was available in anything other than a 1911!

I adore my Kimber 45 ACP. I just outfitted it yesterday for 45 super loads. Will fire acp loads also with no changes.

I think they're very well made, and am surprised at how affordable they are.

Too Tall, I have two Sig 1911's.

One is an original GSR, the first model they made. It is stainless with a rail, not what I preferred but at the time (when they debuted) it was the only one my dealer could find. It will shoot virtually any ammo into nice neat little groups if you do your part.

The other one is an RCS model from their custom shop. It is essentially an Officer's size frame with a Commander size slide. It came with match barrel, trigger, action job, etc. Ditto what I said about the neat little groups earlier. It was designed from the beginning for concealed carry and I carry it sometimes off duty, interspersed with my M&P's.

Over the years I've had various Springfield's (Including Tropy Match's), Colt's, and even an AMT Hardballer, and currently also own a Kimber 10mm, but for my money the Sigs will shoot with the best of them.
