Well, the son of one of the guys in our camp got a very nice 3x3 Blacktail deer. His dad was having trouble with his truck and went into town for parts. We told him the boy could stay with us and Dad would take him out. That evening Dad spots this buck and ranges it for the kid, he made a nice 40yd hard quartering shot(the kid can shoot and it is defiantly in his ability) My buddy and I got back to camp just after dark and he said, they must have gotten something your Dad is always here by dark. About then the phone rings and Dad tells me where they are and that there is a buck shot and they need tracking help. My buddy and I tore off with all the lights we could muster. There was some urgency due to a thunder storm rolling in and we did not want to get rained out and loose the trail. We got there to find them looking for the arrow in a clearing as that dropped off toward a draw with a creek. Dad said he ran between that stump and log pointing down the hill. We searched and searched and searched for blood and I finally found two drops near where Dad lost site of the buck. About an hour later we found more blood, a drop here and there but nothing substantial. I gave the kid my light and told him to work up ahead in the direction the deer was headed(basically to give him something to do instead of walk all around where we were trying to track). He goes not 30 yards and says "Here he is" He is one happy camper, it is a very nice Blacktail.

It was an extremely dark night and I will never forget watching the lighting storm come over the ridge. Every time there was a flash it lit the woods up....very cool.

Good for the young lad. Not often does someone so young have opportunity at such a nice buck. That is great that you fellows helped him track it when so little sign. The bleeding must have mostly been internal. Congratulations to the young fellow.

I have seen that on a bull that I shot once. He was hard quartering away and the arrow hit right behind the last rib. The bull ran off through the timber and we found him just a few mintues later about 60 yards from where I shot him. He had just a tiny trickle of blood coming down his side as the arrow was still buried in the elk, with only the fletching showing. He was completely filled with blood on the inside.

A first archery buck is a great accomplishment; I'm sure he'll remember that night and all those who helped him for many years.

First buck with a bow is a huge accomplishment! Great shooting and thanks for the story. Scotty

Nice photo and thanks for the story. Give the young fellow a pat on the back for me.
Also to his dad for doing it right. Kids need more input from dads.

Blessings,
Dan

Nice buck, man I envy him, I won't even get a chance to Bow hunt this year, I might be gun crazy, but I love bow hunting, hunting at it's best. 8)

That is a very fine first buck! It looks bigger than any buck I have ever killed!

Congrats!

Nice buck, give em a big high five for me.. I'm not really up on my blacktails, but that looks like a very respectable buck. Awesome.

super-7,

Think smaller mule deer. It is a very good blacktail; and to be the first one a young man has taken with a bow!!! It could spoil him for many years to come.

That is exactly the case here. My Dad(who was the one with the kid) said it was a solid hit and the deer is dead somewhere near by. He was right, it was a very tough track though. Every animal I have shot or seen shot with that type of hard angle has been the same type of recovery. Extremely little blood until you cut them open.

Ya, that is one very nice blacktail, we all were impressed and tried to impart what a nice deer it was on the kid. When his Dad got back to camp the next day I don't know who was more excited him or the kid.

That is a "very" nice blacktail, more than just a good buck. They dont get that big in our area. Congragulate that youg man for a great buck and great job with a bow. !!!
