A couple new tools can really make a difference

I just finished loading up 600 rnds of 17Hornet and I used a couple new tools that really helped. The first was a flexible LED strip that mounted inside the press. Great little idea that I found at Cabelas for 15 bucks. It enabled me to double check powder level before I placed a bullet and added a bright light in a shadowed work space. The second product was a new funnel by CRT(Custom Reloading Tools). It's aluminum and is threaded for adapters that fit .17, .20 and .22 caliber cartridges. The make another for the larger calibers. What I like about is that the funnel with the .17 adapter will sit on the case without tipping. My other funnels won't do that. That means it frees up one hand. Last year I threw all the powder charges weighing every tenth one. It was fairly accurate; keeping every thing within .2 grains. The 17Hornet is a super accurate round but charge weights between 10 and 12 grains mean that .2grns can make a difference. This year I weighed every charge with my Hornady Chargemaster. It went very smoothly and every charge was within .05gns. This ammo groups even better. I've been getting 1/2" 3 shot groups and 3/4" 5 shot groups. It's a lot of fun to hit a dime sized dot with the first shot let alone a sagerat's head at a hundred yards.

Very cool Scott. I like that 17 Hornet. I'd like a small cartridge like that or something similar. Scared I'd have a hard time actually just picking up the bullets though.

Those funnels look very nice. Do they make a drop tube extension?

Third picture down - comes with a 2" drop tube. I shoot the 20gn V-max and a local store has them as regular item 17$ per 100. I get 600 rounds from a lb. of powder. Head shot a coyote at 160yds..... DRT. The hardest thing to find is powder, AA1680 is pretty scarce. I picked up three lbs. when I bought the gun and I just loaded the last of it.

I've got a Ruger 77-17. Nice rifle but I'm selling after varmint season. I want to build one on a CZ527 or a minimauser. The 77 is a rear lug bolt and I can't figure out how to bed it. The recoil lug is located aft of the magazine well. It shoots well but I think this cartridge in the right rifle would shoot in the .3s.

I would like one of the CZ Lux's in a 222 Rem. Every time I see one I get a little weaker.

You gotta love tools that make a job easier. I had eye-balled those funnels and thought they would be the cat's meow.

What is your load and velocity Muleman. I want to try it in my CZ 17 Hornet/

I like the T slots those would work really nice for multipule shot gun presses. What size nut fits them? Roter the slots than drop and screw the T slots in them?

Like both the funnel and light. I had to make a drop tub from brake tube just to load the 22 hornet do to its thin case neck.

AA1680 worked nice in my 22 hornet but Lilgun just pushed the 40 grainers to 3000 fps with less pressure so its what I use. Since I picked up a 221 FB I have settle on 45 gr Speers at 2880 fps set at the SAAMI OCL so the can fit in magizine.

If I could buy 22 K-Hornet brass I would ream my hornet to it to pick up an extra 100 fps and it just looks cool. Like the 17 Hornet does. I use the small Harrel measure for the hornet and then trickle in the last bit on the scale.

The light strip is a great idea. I've seen it before and thought about getting one. The older I get, the more I like lots of light.

Nice! I too had a chargemaster. It was a nice tool, but being the tool maker that I am, I wasn't totally happy with it. I made a mount that holds my powder measures over the standard Hornady scale with a trickler on the side. I can drop a charge, trickle the last grain or two, and seat a bullet faster than the chargemaster can meter out its charge.

Fotis,
I use 11.8gr of AA1680, 20gr V-maxs and Rem 7.5 Benchrest primers. COAL is 1.710.
My Ruger has a hard bolt lift shooting factory rounds so I had to back down a tad. I'm getting 3650FPS and the brass is holding up really well.

TJEN,
The T rail is made by Rockler and they use 1/4" or 3/8" T-bolts. They are easily installed with a router. And, yes they screw down into the slot. Pretty easy if you have the tools and basic wood working skills. I have all my tools mounted on plywood bases that can be attached to the bench in a few seconds. There are other T rail manufactures that utilize standard bolts.
I always thought 22K-Hornet brass was fire formed from standard 22Hornet brass.

22 K-Hornet brass is fire formed, Thats too much work for just 100 fps for me. In the 22 hornet the lilgun is magic pushing a 40gr 200 -300 fps faster than any other powder and with less pressure than the other powders do at their lower velocity.

Not sure how it works the 17 hornet but you seem to have good velocity with AA1680. Have you tried a cooler primer like the Fed205 or BR#, yep forget which is the SRP the BR2 or BR4.

In the 22 hornet and Lilgun I use the CCI500 which is listed OK and the primer to use with this lower pressure combination. Small case cooler primer. I used the fed 205M with AA1680 for a 2720 fps load with a 40gr. both are very accurate .03-.05" all day.

Muleman and Fotis....
Just a little more data regarding the 17 hornet. I load 11.6 grains of 1680 with a remington 7 1/2 and with the 20 grain Nosler Varm. it's a nice load. The 20 grain VMax with the same load is not as good; like 1 1/4" inch groups. Anyway, I found that the 25 grain VMax is a tack driver in my 77/17.... with 10.4 grains of 1680 it'll shoot 3/8" groups consistently if you do your part. Don't know why the heavier bullets perform better in my gun but they do and it took me a while to get it sorted out. BTW - originally worked with LilGun and couldn't get it to group worth a hoot with 4 or 5 different bullets; in addition at 9.5-9.6 grains with a 20 grain bullet it was 3700 fps plus... don't know where Hodgdon got the 10 grain max load !!

Calhoun out of Montana turned me on to the 1680 and what a find. He did mention that 2200 might actually perform better with the 25 grain bullets but I'm fat, dumb and happy as is ! Hope this info might be useful guys. Frank

G'Day Fella's,

Muleman, thanks for the review on these items, much appreciated!
