A little .308 ammo

Wow guy that is a fair amount of .308 ammo. That is more than we have stocked at my office presently. Just a curiousity note when you were in the comps and even now what is your round count before a cleaning. I had a guy at the range tell me it better to be clean after every few rounds. I was always told it best to run the rifle on the dirty side. Maybe cleaned before the hunting season and not again until the next season. What is your practice on cleaning?

I seldom clean this barrel. Every couple of hundred rounds or so anymore.

When I do, it's just a couple of patches of something mild, via a nylon brush. Wipe Out if I feel the need to get the copper/jacket material out - and it takes a lot of rounds to build up much copper in these hand-lapped, cut-rifled Krieger barrels. Had an old match shooter explain to me many years ago when I was fretting about wanting to clean it during an 80 shot match (80+ one day, 80+ the next) "Guy, that's what you paid Krieger for, a smooth barrel that won't foul much, and when it does, it still shoots good. Clean it after the match if it makes you feel good." So... I followed his advice and shot well. Hmmm. Have taken that on as a general practice. This is however my only rifle with a custom barrel. I've gone through, I think 4, or 5, .308 Win barrels in the past 20 years. I dumped the factory barrel after 4,000 rounds (I wasn't sure it was done, but I wanted a Krieger) and the Kriegers have all lasted 5,000 - 6,000 rounds, still producing NRA "High Master" scores. I replace them when the X-ring count starts dropping.

With a rougher, production barrel, I'll clean more often. I seldom let my .25-06 go more than 20 or 30 rounds before cleaning the jacket fouling from it. It fouls a LOT faster than the .308 Win/Krieger. I figure that's a combination of a rough bore, high velocity, and a small bore.

FWIW, Guy

I'm always intrigued, Guy, by the shine on your bolt knobs. A testament to the hours you've put in and an indication of your effectiveness with those tools. Good work.
