Now that the holidays are over and I've been blssed with some spare change, I've been considering trading in my old Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless in 300 Win Mag for a new Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in the same caliber, I am a little apprehensive though as no one I know has one and I have yet to shoot one. anyone have one or know anything thus?

I handled a 300 WM in the Model 70 Super Grade. It was an extremely handsome rifle, very well finished. I did not shoot it, however. On the other hand, I have three of the new Model 70 Featherweights; each shoots quite well and the fit and finish are very good indeed.

I played with them and the quality was quite good. Very handsome rifles and shoot very well.

I have now handled around ten or so of the new Model 70s, and they show a lot more attention to detail than the last ones to come out of the New Haven facility. There is none of the rough finish and lack of attention to detail that characterised the final product in the old line.

I am a pretty dyed-in-the-wool 700 fan, but I felt like I got my money's worth out of the new M70. I caved last spring and jumped on a .270 Featherweight. There is one little spot where the tang stands off the stock by about 1/16", but otherwise fit/finish are great. The trigger is easy to adjust, crisp and clean, the epoxy bedding is carefully placed and the bolt glides like it's on ice.

As far as groups, load development was downright boring. 130 grain SolidBase, BT, AB or PT and a max charge of H4831. All were 1" or under.

Nice rifle.
The new Winchesters are manufactured by FNH otherwise known as FN. They have been making guns for a long time. They made the Browning shotguns that everyone wants over in Belgum. I remember when they started producing Brownings in Japan. Everyone was %$#@ed

Nice looking rifle. Sounds like she is a shooter. A little tweaking with your loads could reveal even better accuracy. Have you tried changing the COL?

JD - all of the work noted above was done about .020" off the lands. I did try backing the ABs up in 5-thousandth increments but groups opened considerably. For now, I'm content with what I've got.

elkslayer - for what it's worth, having bought this one, I would certainly go back for another. From what I've seen with this rifle and from what DrMike and others on here have shared, you will likely be pleased with a new one.

After much looking and fondling, and asking folks on this forum, I believe my son has decided that he wants to get the new Model 70 Extreme SS. It comes with a Bell and Carlson synthetic stock that has an aluminum bedding block and has some glass bedding as well around the recoil lug area. The barrel is floated. It looks like it will be a great rifle and one he won't beat the stock up on. I am not a huge sythetic fan myself although I know the concept behind them. The fit and finish look excellent and I think we are going to bite the bullet on this one!! :)

That is why I am saving my duckets for a Win M70 FWT in 30-06. Then put a nice Leupold VX3 on it. That is my idea of a classic bolt gun. Scotty
