On Thursday morning I pillar bedded the new Boyd’s stock for my daughter’s Africa rifle then on Friday I bedded the action and free floated the barrel. I’ve done a few now so it came out well. On Saturday I took my 28Nosler and the Kimber 325WSM along with the 270WSM wearing new furniture the range. The Kimber didn’t like any of the 180gr Etip loads I fed it. Gave up after 3 powders and 5 powder weights. I have a pet load of 66gr of RL17 under a 220 grain Sierra that shoots 1/2 inch groups. Little more drop but a real hammer when it arrives. Think I’ll scope it with a VX3 with that has the B&C reticle. My son likes that rifle a lot. The 28 has its tried and true load of a 175 gr over 88gr of RL33 moving at 3200fps. Fired one group that was about the size of a nickel. She’s ready for the dark continent! My daughter’s rifle is my fast twist 270WSM that I took to Alberta and dropped a whitetail with last November. I was working on a lighter, flatter load for it. 66 grains of RL 26 and 130gr Accubonds was the last load I shot. It went into .662” group with 4 shots moving out at 3350fps. A Lazer beam!
Then on Sunday afternoon I took the kids out to teach them how to shoot off standing sticks. Just took the 17HMRs out to focus on technique. Ducks to water is what it was. I put a 8” gong out at 100yds and they each smacked it a hundred times in a row. We’ll try the hunting rifles next at 200yds. I don’t know why I’m surprised, they both have over 10k rounds down range shooting sage rats.
Makes a Dad kinda proud though
The picture is of the 270WSM with the new design from Boyd’s. The adjustable length of pull has almost 2” of travel. It can also serve as a back up gun for my son and I.
