Is there any problems using short chamber barrels in long action receivers. I want to build a BR rifle with a 700 action, so controled feeding isnt nessesary. I ask because you can buy a new 700 long action for $405 complete rifle. And I actully havent decided on a caliber yet. Thanks for any help.

Feeding is the biggest issue but a magazine block and a longer bolt stop could help. You also may have to change the magazine follower/spring.Rick.

O C K -

A friend here has a 6 BR built on a ruger 77. It originally was a .308. He had a block put in the mag well and It shoots great. We recommend Walmart for a source for a complete Rem 700 rifle at a reasonable price. $350 or there abouts. From there you can have the 'smith take what he needs and use the rest as trade. Brownell's also sells just the Rem. 700 action for your $400 or so price.

Good luck with the BR project.

Yes the $405 rifle I was refering to was from walmart. Last I checked Brownells had very limited quanities of 700 actions, and only short actions. I am interested in the 700 action because pre threaded barrels are readily available, and many other parts too.
Thanks OCK

The Mauser large ring action is hard to beat when you want to build a sporting rifle. You can find surplus large ring Mauser rifles for under $100. Midway had a package deal last month for barrels in various calibers ready to thread into a Mauser action and drop in stock for the Mauser, all for under $125. A 'smith still must headspace the barrel, as they come short chambered. Chamber reamers can be rented for about $25.
