Okay - I'm a die hard plinker. I love to take my .22 Marlin 39A to the range, set up my little metal "dinger" targets and go through a box of ammo, or two, from standing, sitting, kneeling and prone.

Past two years I've had to curtail that practice, to keep enough .22 on hand to teach my beginning pistol classes.

I'd like to get back into that rifle position shooting, not in competition, just for my personal satisfaction & good rifle practice.

Who makes a good, solid, reliable, accurate air rifle?

No, I don't feel compelled to buy an Olympic/competition level rifle...

Just want to do some good target practice at 25 - 50 yards. Without being dependent on .22 ammo supplies.

Thanks, Guy

Im looking forward to the responses that you will get Guy. Ive been wanting to get a solid air rifle myself. Ive shot a few Benjamins before. They seemed to be well built.

Look at Pyramid air rifes web sight they have everything and anything you would want.from 177cal up to the big boys. A nice 22 cal or 25 cal would work well for plinking and handle varmints also.

A friend of mine uses a Benjamin Marauder in .25cal.... not quite the equivalent of the .22LR in range or killing power but very good none the less.

I still have a quantity of ammunition I bought back in the day that the boy and I are judiciously working through... once it dries up, it's on to the air gun.

Guy go to Pyramid Air and check out the TX200 right around $625 for a high quality air rifle with an adjustable trigger in either .177 or .22 one of the better air rifles with an under barrel lever cocking lever which is better than a break barrel. Also Diana, RWS or Webly are top quality pellet rifles.

Get you self a Weihrauch 97 in .177cal(4,5mm). Shoot with 9-10 grain pellets.

It doesn´t become more accurate than this out-of- the-box.

Its a springpowered(selfcontainen) airrifle. You can also use it for rabbits and such.

As Truckdriver also suggest is an AirArms TX200. Very very good rifle too.

Expect to shoot about 500-1000 pellets before the spring "sets" to consistancy of shot-to-shot.

Springpiston airrifles is like a Mauser 98...the more you Work it, the more smoother it becomes. Real mechanics!!.
A spring powered airrifle that has shot more than 20000 shots is as smooth as a Swiss Watch.
One of my spring airguns has shot over 70000shots and accurate as ever.

Thanks guys! Good info. I've no interest in using one for hunting, I can still use the .22 for that. I just want to resume my target practice routine, which has been hampered by the .22 ammo problem.

I have quite a bit of .22 ammo, but try to keep most of it for my clients/students.

I would say a springpowered airrifle will educate even the best shots. It´s important the shooter doesn´t clench too hard on the gun, but let the gun recoil freely in one way. The sligtest mistake is visible 50meters further down. Just like shooting a real longbow.
A follow-through is very important.

Good luck with your second youth

My dad got into PCPs this summer. Recharge with a scuba tank or smaller paintball size tank. Get 150-200 shots per charge around 800fps. They are spooky accurate, and great trigger practice.

He has the KalibrGun Cricket bullpup 22cal. I head-shot a eurasian collered dove we lasered at 72yards.

The Benjamin Marauder is a bit cheaper and just as accurate.
