I continue to use 2400 in .357, .41, and .44 magnum cartridges. It is just too good to pass up. It has been a mainstay in magnum handgun reloading for a long time.
I have used H 110, WW 296, 4227, etc., etc., but just keep coming back to 2400. It is reliable powder.
I have to admit that about everyone I know who shoots IHMSA competition uses either H 110 or N 110 in their magnum cartridges. And, I use H 110 for that usage as well. But, for hunting loads, I always gravitate back to 2400.
I tried Lil Gun for a while, but it just was not that different. It was a standout with heavy cast bullets in the 44 magnum, though.
Just be aware that the current 2400 is just a little faster burning than the stuff that Elmer Keith and the like were using. You need to use a little less than is listed in some of the older reloading manuals.
I have tried a number of powders in the .41 Magnum and still have not found any better than 2400.
A pistol powder that lots of folks overlook is Blue Dot, it burns clean and gives good results. Just no reason to use it over 2400, that I can see.
But then, I am still fond of such things as 4831 and 4350, so I guess that dates me as well. Stuff that works just works, no real need to change.
Do not get me wrong, I LOVE all the powder options we have now. But if something works why not stick with it? I have a number of friends who are using H 4831 in their 270 Winchester rifles. It worked for Jack O'Connor and it works now.
I prefer H110 in my 44 mag. I burnt quite a bit of 2400 as did my dad in his old 357 but found it too dirty for my taste. The stuff left unburnt granuals that found there way under the ejector and every so often would need brushing out to allow closing the cylinder. Accuracy was good though as was velocity. I would use it as a solid second choice if H110 wasn`t available.
