With RL 22, 160 grain Accubonds, what would be the better pick of primers: Federal Gold Metal Match Mag, CCI Bench Rest, or CCI250?

Corey

Corey,

I agree with Powerstroke!
I use Federal GM215M primers exclusively in my magnum loads.

Cool beans, thanks guys. Working up 160 AccuBond and once I'm done with that the 150 grn E-Tip.

Corey

Corey,

Let us know how the 160 gr AB shoots for you.
As for the E-Tip, remember that the mid range load is considered MAX.
Due to the longer bearing surface, pressures can spike very quickly.

Thanks for the heads up on the E-TIp. That kind of bugs me you can only get about mid way and have to stop, I understand why but wich to get more out of it, but that does not look like it will happen. I also thought since it is almost as long as a AccuBond it would have a better BC but it is not all that great.

I'll stick work it up because I see my state passing a similiar law like Californias on lead.

Corey

I use CCI250's for all my magnum loads. Good luck with your load work. Looking forward to your groups. I bet RL22 is going to really impress you. Scotty

Corey,

If you have access to the Federal 215 primers, that is the way to go. The CCI250s will work just fine if that is all you can find, however.

I have all three of them I mentioned above plus non-match federal mags. I read somewhere else someone said that CCI250 where the best with RL 22 in the 7mmRM. That is the main reason I ask.

Every gun/load is different so you will have to test them and find out which works the best for your rifle.

I pretty much use what I can buy. Have both CCI and Federal Magnum primers. My guns don't show a preference for either one. Try em and see which one your gun likes best.

All I've used lately is Fed215's. I"ve got great results using the regular 215's so I've stuck with them.

Any of them will work though and like JD said, you'd have to literally try every one of them to actually see what your rifle prefers with that given load, as it would more then likely change if you switched bullets or powders. If you wanna test 5 different primers with every bullet and powder combo go ahead, but its really not neccesary. Pick one and give it a whirl. If its giving you fits even with the powder weight and seating depth fine tuned, then try another primer or two, but I've never tried more then 3 myself in any given rifle to find a load, so to actually say this primer or that primer is the best, ask yourself if you tried every primer out there before you say that. If one is getting great results with the first primer they try or even the second, how do they REALLY know thats the best one if they stop load development right there, when there is still 2-3 others out there they can still try?

I dont believe a mag primer is neccesary for a 7 mag either unless your in sub zero weather.

I've used CCI BR-2's in a 300 RUM burning 92g of H1000 and didn't have any problems at time of load development in late fall. Temp was anywhere from 50-60 degrees i imagine. When I took them elk hunting and the temp was in the 20's is when I experienced hangfires. Only reason I tried them is because I coudln't find any mag primers and figured I would try them, they went BOOM and they were accurate, 1.5-2" groups at 300 yards so I went with em. Anyways I wouldn't think something burning 25g less powder would need a mag primer, unless hunting severe cold temps anyways.

Well thanks for the replies interesting stuff. Remmington man thanks you have some good points. I think I will stick with mag primers though, I do hunt in colder weather and I don't want to chance missing something because of a hangfire.

In subzero weather it would not be hangfires I would worry about. Inconsistant velocity, causing poor accuracy. My choice of primer for the 7mm rem mag is a CCI 250 from your list.
