Another Build???

Jeff,

I like orphans that get scant respect. Some of them are noted for their "kick butt" ability; they just had a bad start in life. The .284 is one such cartridge. Overshadowed by the .270 and .280 and chambered in the Model 100 and the Model 88, it didn't really have much of a chance at the start.

Yeah, the 284 Win is another one that should be chambered in a Featherweight with a decent magazine on it.. Pretty sure it would be a keeper.

And that is what my build will be, Scotty--a long action Model 70 with the proper mag box.

Yeah, I can see greatness coming with that one..

I was reminded of the Remington brain-dead marketing of the .280 when Remington released this cartridge as a Model 760 cartridge with 40K CUP and doomed it as an underperforming caliber forever with Grandma level pressures so that they could release it in the autoloader rifle. At least with the .284 Winchester, they did not underload it despite only chambering it in DOA models. There are a number of Marketing still born or underloaded cartridges which have been foisted on the unsuspecting public. These include but are not limited to the:

6mm Rem (by Remington) with 1 in 14 twist.
.257 Roberts (by Remington) with 40K PSI pressures for model 1888 Mauser.
6.5mm Rem Mag (by Remington) in Model 600 rifle
7x57 MM (by Remington) chambered for 1888 Mauser pressures.
.280 Rem (by Remington) Chambered for 760 Semi auto rifle pressures.
.284 Win ( by Winchester) Chambered for Models 88 and 100, not Model 70.
.350 Rem Mag (by Remington) chambered for Model 600 Remington.

Nearly all of these cartridges were nearly stillborn because they were not properly matched for performance or appropriate model of firearm. Note that they are overwhelmingly Remington marketing errors. It seems that Mike Walker was the only Remington management person with any vision?

To give Remington a little credit though, they did standardize the 22-250 and the 35 Whelen. Two of my favorites..

But they never really marketed these chamberings Scotty, they just commercialized them and said pretty much nothing at all. Plus, Remington never chambered the Model 700 for the .35 Whelen except in the Classic for one year!

Well, they did a few BDL's and a bunch of CDL's as well. One of my best shooters actually.. Really surprised it made it out of Remington's factory with a barrel so straight! HA!

Yeah, you are right, they did make some CDL's. I don't pay much attention to Remington any more, especially since they destroyed Marlin and 138 people with it!

I did mine on a long action "re-used my lawton 7000"you pretty much have to in order to get the full potential out of it. I went with a 1-8 twist bartlein 5R barrel to shoot the heavies, they fit nicely with plenty of room left over in the AI 300 WIN magazines. This will be the first 7mm i have ever owned.

Sounds pretty cool Jeff. My first hunting rifle was a 7mm Rem Mag, and the first real cartridge I loaded for myself, so the 7mm's are pretty cool. You'll dig it I think. I gotta think 7mm is tied with 30 cals for most bullets available.

You can add the .260 to the list, Charlie. Introduce a superb long range chambering, fail to market it, then only chamber it (a couple of years after introduction) in the short, light, funny handling Model Seven carbines.

Kurt,

Good to see you stirring again. What's shaking for you?

Thanks, Mike. Fighting over parenting time for Nolan, starting a job with the city tomorrow, started spending a lot of time on a tool forum (this could be bad, ever priced Gedore, Hazet or Stahlwille hand tools?), realized that all my ammo in in the very back of a storage unit (groan)...

I have been lurking, though...

Glad to see you back on your feet with job and all. I have been there done that on parenting time. Nothing worse than an ex who feels that she has to get even especially if she has nothing to get even for. Then no good deed goes unpunished!

Exactly, Charlie, and I'm sure she thinks that she is the victim too, even though she is the one pushing everything.

Sorry that has to happen Kurt. I have two kids who I paid 100% of their college tuition and board through private Ivy League schools and they never even thanked me, let alone speak to me! Women can do that emotionally to your children and think nothing of it!

Kurt I am glad you are back up and on the forum. I pray that you will be able to spend a lot of quality time with your son Nolan :)

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks, fellas.

There sure is a good group of guys (and ladies!) hanging here. JD, Fotis, you guys run a great board...
