Another Model 94

I picked up another Model 94 Big Bore. It is a .356 that has had fewer than a box of shells through it. It is in great condition. The dovetail sight is missing, which matches another of my Model 94s. Since I use either a Williams Peep Sight or a scope, this is not a problem for me. Still, I'll likely pick up a sight and put it on just for completeness. I have a Kahles 2-7X36 that I'll likely put on this rifle; I must have bought it just for this purpose. This is the sixth Model 94 big bore in my possession (three chambered in .356, two chambered in .307 and one chambered in .375). Does this make me a collector? Or just sick?

If it is a sickness Dr Mike, my uncle also has it and he claims there is no known cure

he has a 307, 356, 375, and 450 but he also has a few Winchester lever action in the models produced before the 94

He may be to sick to be saved lol

Congrats to you on the purchase

What's worse, I've never been excited about owning a .30-30! Not that I would be unwilling to pick one up, but I want it to be handsome! And, yes, I'm keeping my eyes open for a decent Model 71 and a decent Model 86. And I wouldn't turn down a Model 92. I had a Model 64, and let it go some years ago. That won't happen again.

Congrats Mike!

How hard is it to find or make .356 brass & ammo these days? I haven't seen a .356 Win in a loooong time.

Always thought it made a lot of sense, as a hard-hitting, woods-range lever gun.

Guy

I have about 400 new or once-fired brass, Guy. I'm in good shape for brass. One of my .356s shoots 250 grain Kodiak FN to sub MOA and another shoots 220 grain Speer FN to 3/4 inch. Each has harvested game, including grizzly, black bear, elk, moose and mule deer. I'll see what this new one will do, though I don't expect any major problems.

Fotis, this is not a sickness. I repeat that mantra every morning when I awaken.

Okay, officially danged jealous (in a great way) .. You have a beautiful bunch of Model 94's buddy. I know it is a sickness, but man, it is a great one.

The wifeeee,s might think it is a sickness. The guys are good with it. Some are perhaps jealous. Ha.

Doctors don't get sick  so you must be a collector . Now then again this is the opinion of a guy that thinks -20 with a 20mph wind is a good ice fishing day :).
Mike you must of picked it up for a good price as you have been into this game for a day or two .

Blessings,
Dan

so where does this put me, exactly ?

Fotis, I see you could not resist posting that picture of me wearing those horse/revolver high heels. I assume you are a man of your word and destroyed that trail cam video of us skinny dipping or is it also about to show up. Let me know as I need to give Jerry a heads up before he see s it without a prior explanation

Dr Mike;
Nice pickup. I don't believe the phrase "too many" was ever intended to apply to rifles.
You guys are giving me a lever acquisition disease. Man. Dangerous. Guess I better tell the daughters to get to work on more grandkids.
Dewey

Aleena,

I'm looking for the trail cam pictures to be posted!

Dan, the rifle was well below the going price, just as the last two .307s were easily one-half of the going price at the time. One of those had fewer than one box of shells through them and the other was about 95%. This one was offered back to the seller. Someone told him that he sold it too low and the offer was to send it back and he would tear up the cheque. He declined, saying that he was satisfied in any case. I assure you that I am pleased.

Dewey, jump in now; the prices will only go up on these New Haven produced rifles.

Those are nice classic rifles and the end of an era for the old 94s with the most modern loads they were chambered in. I'm surprised you haven't picked up any of the 94 Timber models in 444 or 450 Marlin. They should be great for Alaska size game. I had the 450 version for a while and it's a pocket howitzer with surprising accuracy.

I haven't seen one at a price I thought was reasonable, or I would have one of each. I saw each of those chamberings when they were new, and I wasn't in a position to expend the coin to secure them for myself.

The Model 94 in a 444 would be a SWEET addition. Not sure I'd want a 450 Marlin, but I am afraid I would fall weak if the price were right.

The downside of the 444, when I did handle one, was that it comes replete with the wart on the side (lawyer installed safety), which has caused me to decline purchasing several otherwise fine Model 94s.

I wonder if a simple safety delete wouldn't be a more tasteful fix to them.. I know the Marlin's have Saddle rings they can put in there to get rid of that safety.. I don't like them either.

Is the new 356 without a safety?

None of Model 94s have the cross-bolt safety. I know it is a relatively easy fix to get rid of the safety, but since I've been able to find a pretty good stable w/o that feature, I've held out for the purity of the action. If I were to find a 444 or a 450 Marlin in decent shape at this stage, I might be tempted to purchase it (or them). I would, however, destroy collector value by removing the cross-bolt safety. Though I won't be using the dovetail sights, I will replace the missing sight on this newest acquisition, in all likelihood.

When I could not find brass fro my 356 I did some case measurement research.

I took 100 444 marlin cases. One pass through a 356 or 358 win die and trim with my Lee case trimmer length gauge (had it special ordered through Lee).

Worked like a charm.
