Here in Utah, yesterday afternoon, credit cards started showing "hits" from the big game draw.
So this morning i log onto my cabelas visa account, and quickly realize I've got something big!
almost $500 bucks missing.......... so I call cabelas and ask for details of pending charges.
She says "well, there's three different ones from utah bucks and bulls. $35, another $35, and $408". I told her that I loved her!!!!! LOL
$408 is the price tag on a resident bull moose tag. utah moose is once in a lifetime, I killed mine in 2004. My father, son, and girlfirend all used my card to apply this year (yeah, I did it for them). So it's one of them, we won't know which for another week or so.
Ummmmmmmm....... I'm gonna need a bigger house!!!!!
The 325wsm is gonna get it's first kill!!!!!!!!!!
YEEEEE HAWWWWW

Congrats to your family buddy! That is excellent news for sure! Man, I imagine that is going to be a great hunt. Any pictures of your last moose taken? Wow, I can't imagine how amped up you must be right now. Scotty

That is great news! This should make for a great hunt this fall. What sort of moose population does Utah have? Where are they primarily located? That 325 will be a great cartridge for moose. My first kill with mine was a moose at 60 yards. The 200 grain Partition smacked him right smart! He didn't move. It has taken several elk since that shot. We're all pulling for you.

That is a great moose Chet! I can't wait to get moose hunting again!

I imagine your 325WSM is going to be super! Probably just about ideal for your hunting out there too. Light and easy to carry with alot of Whoppum on the animal side! Scotty

Mike, these are shiras moose. The smallest (and typically blackest) of the mooses.
Only the north-eastern part of the state has moose. and typically from 7000ft - 11000ft.
estimated total population is 3200. Poaching and predation are BIG problems for utah moose.
The first Utah moose hunt was in 1958, ten permits were sold, seven bulls were killed. In 2008, Utah harvested 266 bull moose (highest ever). It's a far cry from your moose opportunities, I really really really want to venture north someday for a MONSTER!!!!

Chet,

I assumed he was a Shiras. He is a handsome fellow, though. The population is larger than I might have imagined. It sounds as if the success rate is fairly high, though. Man, we're all pulling for your family to tag out this fall. Best of luck to you.

Chet that is a beautiful animal you got! I'm tickled for you guys just to get to go again is awesome. We expect many many pictures and some photo's of that 325 WSM and range reports!!

Congrats Chet...best eating of any of the 4-legged animals in my book. Best of luck with the hunt this fall. Do you call them in or is it more of a spot and stalk type of hunt?

chet,

Congratulations on this years draw! Someone is going to be really happy next week! The suspense must be taking its toll.
That is a great bull you took in 2006, congrats to you.
What bullet are you going to use in the 325 WSM?

I'm hoping the 200gr PT shoots well......
I've been "breaking in" with factory winchester 220gr powerpoints, and last night they actually shot sub moa. So I think the PT's will tune right in!!!!! I've got some 180 bt's and tsx's to play with also..... (and if it's the girlfriends tag, I'll probably load some light 150gr for practicing).
If it's my 14 year olds tag, he'll want use his 300wm.... It shot quite well also.

Thanks for all the kind words! I hope we can find one bigger than the last!

My "go to" load in the 325 WSM is 200 grain PT charged with 64.0 grains of Big Game (0.03 inch groups and 2800 + fps). It certainly puts a smack down on moose and elk. Consequently, my rifle shoots 200 grain TSX, 200 grain AB and 220 grain A-Frames just as well, but the Partition load gives me slightly better velocity for a winning combination.

Thats great your rifle is getting broke in well. I bet you won't have a whole lot of trouble tuning in a 200gr PT. Looking forward to hearing about who drew and your Summer scouting. Scotty

Chet
