Another Reason I Don't Like Neck Shots

A graphic story out of Louisiana caught my attention this morning. Thought I'd share it with the forum.

There are some lessons apparent in the account. One that I've held to for some time is that neck shots are risky. If you don't hit bone, you have a wounded animal that could prove problematic.

I ended up with one this past December. I was shooting my 270 Vanguard and the doe was about 70 yards away with scattered brush between us. I aimed right for the chest cavity as always, and when I fired she dropped like a rock just like the other deer did this year.

Once I went to check her out later on I found the hole at the base of the neck right where it joins the body. All I can figure out is that a bit of a twig or branch deflected the shot enough that it went up and left compared to where I aimed. Thankfully the shot still did its job.

Wow is right. I don't care for neck shots either. I almost lost a buck once with a neck shot. He went about 1 1/2 miles before I found him bedded and I still had to shoot him again.

I don't shoot necks at all anymore and even when I was young and stupid, I didn't, do it often.

I lost a big buck a number of years ago when I tried a neck shot & missed :evil:. I just was not patient enough as I only needed to let him take 1 more step. I was using my 375 H&H I thought it was DRT but missed . I have not tried a neck shot since, not saying that if a real big fellow gave me just his neck that I wouldn't try :wink:.

I have on occasion taken a head or neck shot. They are only as a last resort and only at close range. I have lost more game because of a head or neck shot that any "other" placement. Its a small number given my overall game count, however I remember each one with distaste. I am not proud of those loss's. I refer to either shot as a chump shot. Just my .02

I can account for two neck shots my entire life, hunting Big Game. Never have liked neck shots for many reasons. I highly favor the boiler room shot, take out the lungs or heart and it puts meat in the freezer.
