Well once again I didn't get an Elk, but the trip was awesome. Good therapy just being in the Colorado Rockies again. We had snow, cold temps. and incredible fellowship.

I saw Elk almost everyday with the usual situations, on private ground or 5-miles away etc.
I did spot a couple cows bedded in the snow on the edge of some black timber one day, my friend's son killed the biggest cow at a ranged 1045 yards using his 7mm Rem Mag with 168 Berger Bullets.
Amazing shot too. I helped as with the others in the recovery and packing out, got into a heavy snow storm as we packed out.

Oh yeah almost forgot, my Burris Signature scope fogged up during the hunt rendering it useless.
This is the second time this has happened. Spoke with Burris since getting home told them I'm done with their product and wanted a new scope. Looks like I'm getting a new scope.
More on that later.

Don,

Sorry you didn't connect, but glad you had the opportunity to hunt Colorado. Congratulations to your friend's son; that sounds like a great shot. Also sorry to hear about the scope; that can definitely be disconcerting when it happens.

Happy Thanksgiving Dr Mike, loved your write up on the Moose Hunt, the boys sure got an experience under their belt this year. Congrats all around. I'm heading out tomorrow and Saturday in search of some Deer Meat for the freezer. Loaded some 225 Partitions in the 35 Whelen, that should surely do it!

I'm just disgusted with Burris product, I will have a new scope gracing the 300 RUM till next year/ not sure what brand yet, have lots of time to research it till then.

Don

I never owned a Burris scope, so I'm really not qualified to speak about their quality. Your experience doesn't make me want to rush out and buy one either. Best of luck on the deer. A blessed and restful Day of Thanksgiving to you and yours. Our Thanksgiving was in October, so today is a work day.

Glad to hear that you had an awesome hunt.. I did likewise in Montana. Never pulled the trigger on an animal.. Like you I had problems with Burris many years ago... Sounds like nothing has changed.

Good luck in future hunts. Rol

Don,

Glad you had a great hunt in CO. It is beautiful there and hope to get back out there to hunt elk again someday.
I had a bad experience with Burris a few years back and will never own another one. I did a write up on it in the Optics section. Take a look at the Leupold VX-6 line up. I have the 3-18x44mm on my 338 RUM and just love it. The lighted reticle is awesome in low light conditions to.

Don, you may have just saved me from buying a big head ache. I was looking at one that was on sale and even though the price is hard to pass up I think I will.
Funny thing is I own 2 Gillhebard pistol scopes made by Burris and I have used them on my 1911s with no problems mounted direct on the slide.
Sorry to here you didn't tag out.

Glad you had a good hunt, despite not tagging an elk.

It's not all about the kill, there's so much more...

Better luck next time!

Guy

Sorry to hear you didn't connect, but glad it was a great time. I just enjoy getting out . I have two Burris scopes, both have been headache free over the years. Not a single issue at all , and have heard they have great customer service. That being said I have always been a leupold man. However of late my last scopes have been Vortex and my next scope will be another Vortex. Lee

Like the others said too bad you didn't get an elk but it was nice to get out I'm sure.

I have had to send back 3 scopes for repair, 2 Leupold's and 1 Burris. Both companies were great, Leupold fixed my scopes and Burris sent me a new one, I still like both even though I had some problems because any scope can fail from any company.

Don,

Glad to hear you had a good time. I won't convey condolences for not tagging out as its about a lot more than just filling tags to me.
I'll admit I like to tag out too,as I think we all do but being in God's country is it's own reward for me.
If you're looking at scopes I'd suggest giving Zeiss, with the HD5 line, a hard look.
Good luck on hunting deer.

Thanks to all, yes it is not about always tagging out, I agree. But I needed this trip just to get away, see the mountains and enjoy being with my friends, just awesome.

As for the scope, I will never own another Burris. Looking at the Vortex Viper line of scopes and others too. Thanks for all the recommendations though.

Burris quality has gone downhill to me, not what it used to be. They will never screw up another ELK Hunt of mine that's for sure.

Don it sure sounds like you had a great time!!! I have to agree that it not always about filling your tag. I know this year with me missing our Moose hunt and now Whitetail season down at the farm.I would have bought a tag just to go knowing that I would not be able to pull the trigger . The adventure and friendships is what it is about.
Also I am sorry to hear about your scope problems. I have never owned Burris and it is highly unlikely that I will after reading about your situation.
Sure hope you are able to connect with the Whelen on a nice Whitetail!! Looking forward to a good story with a few photos .

Blessings,
Dan
