Back up for Dangerous game hunt

My wife does hunt and we have hunted several western states, but usually Montana. And we have on occasion ventured into Canada for a hunt with friends. The largest caliber she has shot is a 375 H & H, but I am sure she could step it up to a 416 Rigby if necessary AND if she was also going to have the opportunity to hunt whatever I am hunting. We have not been but would love to hunt Africa together.

A has heard this joke and thought it was funny so dont worry about it being offensive to her

I told her that at the right time of the month my wife would not even need a gun but on the other side of the coin, I would also worry about whether I took out the trash before the hunt that day--if I didnt, she might hesitate before shooting LOL

John, I showed your post to my wife and she laughed and said " I knew these forums you belong to have information that could save your life sometime in the future--take notes " LOL

John, think about this. the next time your in hunting camp and your wife asks you to do something. If you dont do it, you could have a pissed off wife behind you with a loaded gun and an angry lion in front of you.

Just a little food for thought John LOL

Ha! Forced to choose between my wife and a lion, the lion will lose every time.

On a different forum Aleena was telling us about her husband hunting lions with a German made Jaeger style 62 caliber Flintlock. He asks her to back him up with a modern big bore double barrel rifle.

The question was asked by another member if their were others on the forum, that would choose their wife to back them up if hunting lions with a flintlock.

I said no, that my first choice other than a professional hunter would actually be my mother. She is a good shot, has hunted all her life, has hunted dangerous game, and would not want her son hurt.

would any one else here, besides Jerry, choose his wife to back him up on a lion hunt ?

I have three friends I would trust with such a task but none of them is my wife.

While my wife may desire to save my butt I do not think she has the needed skill and has never been put to such a test. I hate to be the Guinea Pig, as Momma didn't raise me to be a Beta Tester, and would prefer to have someone that has been tested. If not by game animals then by a shooting on the street, multiple, where they were the survivor. Finding someone in more than one lethal encounter narrows the choice considerably.

Besides my wife, while OK with eating game animals, isn't in to hunting or shooting and doesn't want to be around when I kill something. I try not to ask her to do things she doesn't like.

My wife has only minimally hunted big game and has only taken an antelope thus far. But that said, if she wanted to hunt dangerous game and put the time into shooting a big bore for the hunt as I am sure she would, I would not hesitate to have her back me up. My wife and I are both RN's in a level two trauma center. My girl is as cool as a cucumber when the stuff hits the fan. When seconds count, you can't go wrong with a level headed Emergency nurse who knows how to shoot and won't loose their wits when lives are on the line!

People say these things but I am not sure that I know anyone, other than some PH's who I would put my life on the line with a charging lion. I say PH's because the good ones have been there often enough and losing a client to a lion is bad for business. Lions are terribly terrible and fast as greased lightning. When they are angry or injured almost everyone agrees that they are bad business.

I only have one friend who would have when younger had the pluck to be backup but he is older than me now.

Hmmmm? The short happy life of a guy named Macomber.
Paul B.

Exactly!

Be VERY careful about who is backing you...

I'm not sure I'd want the wife backing me up....although we venture armed in bear country quite a lot so in a sense she already does back me up in DG country.

But we're not getting ready to poke a lion with a flintlock either...

I will never poke a lion with a flintlock, of any caliber!

Charlie, a really good read is The adventures of a lion killer by Gerard--he hunted Africa, for lions in the 1845-1855 era. Also another author who hunted that era was Bull, but I can not remember the name of his book, but I believe it was even earlier than 1845.

I was also surprised to find many people travel to Africa today, to hunt with a muzzleloader. I admit, that I am with you Charlie, I have no desire to try it
