Ballistic Tip

Need to select a bullet for deer and was thinking of trying the Ballistic Tip.

I'll be shooting it in a 30-06 out to 600 Yards and likely no closer than 200 Yards. Do I go with the 180 grain or 165 grain bullet or something else altogether?

Either bullet will serve you well under the conditions you describe, Vince.

If you talking out to 600, I'd really be looking at Nosler's 168 BT.. Best of both worlds, speed and BC.

Having shot them, I would use the 165 gr. AccuBond. That is the bullet I use in my 30-06 now, either that or the 165 gr. Partition. I personally feel the AccuBond is a bit better bullet than the Ballistic Tip. Nothing against all you BT lover's out there!!!

I am not a fan of BT if you plan to shoot anything closer than 50-75yards. I had a few really blowup on a deer with my 25-06. This was within the first year or 2 they were out. Maybe it is different now...

Agree. I love the 165's and have a small mountain of them, but the 168's have a little better BC which might matter out there at 500 - 600 yards if there's a little wind...

Oh yeah, the B-Tips came out way back in the 1980's and are GREATLY improved now. There's actually not that much lead left in them, the jacket is so heavy. I've punched 'em through a number of game animals now, mulies, whitetail & pronghorn. No problem, near or far.

And H4350...that stuff is golden in the 30-06.

180. You're not shooting a 300 Savage or .308 Win.

Better BC than the 168 (0.490 vs 0.507) , less wind drift at longer range.
Generally speaking, when I can shoot bigger I do, especially if 600 yard will ever enter into the equation.

The only caveat is if you find the 168 shoots a LOT better than the 180, then go with it. But if it were me I'd start with the 180 any day. In fact, I have 3 different types of 180gr bullets I'll be testing in my 30-06 this year. The 150s and 165s are for the 300 Savage.

Yeah...with that 26" tube go with the 180. You'll get quite a bit more than 2700 I'd think.

If you don't expect a close shot the BT should be fine. The good news is you can use BTs and ABs pretty much interchangeably... not really any different POI between the two. I actually use BTs for load development and hunt with ABs.

What about seating depth?
Does that stay the same between the two bullets?

Yep.
180AB- BC .507 1.38"
180BT- BC .507 1.36"

The really tiny difference in length is below the neck. In my rifle it makes no discernable difference at all- I can shoot mixed magazines and they all hit POA out to as far as I shoot.

I interchange the 140 BT and AB in my 264.. Don't even mess with the seating depth.. They both shoot very well.

I shoot 180's from my 30/06's with H4831 @ 2737fps out to 600yds and see no reason to switch. I've only killed deer under 150yds with mine but they work great and I have never recovered one.
