My buddy and I went to the range yesterday to test Barnes Varmint Grenade bullet on his Remington Mohawk in 222 Remington. This particular rifle shoots the 50 grain V Max acccurately so he thought he'll gave the 50 grain BVG a try. Well no luck! The bullet was hitting the paper sideways. Here's the picture. I'm sending it to Barnes for analysis

Well, I guess you'll rule out VGs. Fascinating picture, however. Clearly, they have not stablised the bullet. It'll be interesting to hear what the Barnes people say.

Well, just checked Barnes Website and they recommend 10 twist for this bullet. The mohawk probably has 14 twist - not enough to stabilized the bullet. That's a bonehead! since majority of bolt gun has 14 or 12 twist barrels. It means only the AR's can use this bullet unless of course you rebarrel your favorite bolt gun.

Fifty grain bullets are about standard for .224 cal. rifles. I could see beyond 60grs. I'm surprised they wouldn't stabilize and glad that I know now.
Thanks for sharing.

Barnes does make a 36 grain Varmint Grenade which might work in your buddies gun. The Varmint Grenade bullets are very long for their weight and the 50's are obviously not going to work in that gun.

The 36gr VG shoots decent out of my .223 Rem. I have taken a few coyotes and a buddy took a bobcat with them. I do not like their performance on larger varmints. Although, all animals died, and died close to where they were shot. The bullets had created huge entry holes and no exit. The bobcat shot at 85 yards, slightly quartering to...the bullet hit just behind the shoulder. The entry wound was probably 6 inches long X 3 inches in height. Again, with no exit.

I have not shot enough animals with them to draw a solid conclusion, but it's not looking great (for me) so far.

I miss my .22 caliber Nosler B-Tips!!!!

I am looking forward to the Nosler bullet....I am a Nosler guy and almost cringe when I have to shoot another bullet through my rifles...Call me crazy!!! Although I do wish it had a solid boattail base....
