The .308 Rem 700 LTR (Light Tactical Rifle) is in general use with many SWAT teams. I set this one up for the team a few years ago, and it's performed very well, despite the Rem trigger & 20" factory barrel. A lot of precision in a relatively light rifle/scope package:

Another police rifleman I know owns one, and has hunted with nothing else for the past nine years. He's taken deer & bear, and maybe an elk - I'm not sure about the last.

They always look business-like, Guy. One could be far more poorly prepared than to carry a .308. It works pretty well in the field.

I kinda want to play with one, if nothing else to see if I dislike the 20" barrel in practice as much as I do it theory.

BTW, what scope is that... a Leupy MK4 30mm? Something like a 3.5-10x50/4.5-14x50?

One of my best friends from college has that same rifle in 300SAUM. It's a real peach, and he gets good velocity from a not-too-close-to-max load under a 165gr bullet. Knocks the stuffing out of north GA white-tails, for sure. He likes the short barrel and the way it handles. I'm more fond of the 26" barrel on my 270Wby, but to each his own. I can tell you that for the very first time this year, I managed to catch the end of my 'bee's barrel on a limb while walking in to climb my tree. All these years of hearing about how longer barrels didn't work in the woods and it took me several years of hunting with that rifle to finally hit a limb.

Yeah, I think I need to worry more about getting all 6'6" of me through the brush. I'm not too worried about an extra 2" (or even 4") of barrel.

Guy,

Nice rig!
The 308 Win make a lot of sense to me for LE, very accurate and plenty of power for the applications LE faces in a tactical situation.

Good to know that it is accurate!

Guy

Cool looking outfit, is the stock made by Remington or by someone for Remington.

Both Bell & Carlson and HS Precision have made stocks for Remington, I don't recall which one this rifle has.

The scope is a 30mm tube Leupold, 3.5-10x. I chose Warne rings and base for this rifle. The 20" barrel is handy in our mostly urban use. Also nice to have a shorter/lighter rifle up in the hills outside of town where we frequently deal with illicit marijuana grows, usually staffed by armed illegals.

I like this little LTR - it's a lot lighter and handier than my personal/duty 700 .308 with the 24" barrel and a McMillan stock.

Some agencies have moved up to the very expensive British made Accuracy International rifles. Wow... Really nice! Way out of budget for my agency though. Some agencies also use custom built rifles - and of course like my own rifle, some of the factory rifles slowly become customs over time - with barrel swaps, different stocks, etc...

The .308 continues to be the most commonly seen cartridge in this role. Accurate. Mild recoil. Sufficient power & range for most tasks. Long barrel life and readily available factory produced match-grade ammo.

Some agencies choose a .223 rifle. There has long been an interest in longer-range rifles, such as the .300 Win mag & 7mm Rem mag. I used a 7mm 700 Sendero for a few years as an alternate rifle. Years (decades?) ago there seemed to be a wider range of cartridges in use by police riflemen. I know of agencies that used: 6mm Rem, .270 Win, .30-06 and of course the 7mm Rem mag & .300 Win mag. Don't see as much of that anymore.

Regards, Guy

Yeah, kind of a fantasy idea...

Of course you could always get a 338 RUM, aka poor man's 338 Lapua.

Guy, can you tell if, outside of the fluting, the barrel contour is the same as the other HB Remingtons? (VLS, VSSF II, P, SPS-V, VS, Sendero)

Never thought to check. I suspect it is, or close. I'll see about measuring it later this week when I'm back at work.

One of my duties is to keep all the SWAT guns up and running - including this cool little LTR and all the full-auto 10.5" barreled .223 Rock River rifles... Tough duty. Especially checking them at the range...
