I've slowed way down the last 5-6 years since getting married and having a little one so you can catch up :lol: . I'm sure it will be even more when the second little one get's here in June. In a few days I get to find out if it's going to be another little boy or girl. Well I'll have to build a few for them too so I might not slow down that much unless they tap me out :mrgreen: .

IdahoCTD, wow, that is quite a collection of calibers, some of which I have never personally known anyone to have that I was aware of, like the Baers, Obermayr, Obermayr and McCowan which are all custom cartridges. Sounds as though you have them spread between the 721/722 and 700 actions? Is there some plan in that or did you find gold mine of really resonable cost older actions to build from?

The Baer calibers are from Bruce Baer that did a bunch of gunsmithing back in the day for some of the shooters at the Original 1000yd Pennsylvania shooting club. The others are barrel manufacturers not calibers. The second list is barrels I have on hand that are unchambered.

I actually only have 1 rifle built on a 721 left. Back in the day we used 722's, 721's, and 700's. Basically whatever we could get cheap. When I first started building guns you could get Hart barrels under 200 and actions for about the same if not less. We found a supply of 40X 22LR stocks for cheap also so with a little work and under 500 bucks we could build a custom gun, if we had the reamer. A friend and I built a ton of them. I've probably chambered over 100 different barrels for myself and I know he's probably done 2 to 3x as many as me. I kind of slowed down for several years and he was still going strong. We probably have 50+ reamers between us.

There are so many calibers today that pretty much fill all the gaps we were wildcatting to achieve back 15-20 years ago. There is also much better powders produced for the large capacity cases. It's just so much more expensive to do today because of the cost of components/dies/barrels/scopes/etc. I bought 3 Vari X111 6.5x20x40 Target EFR Leupolds new back about 15 years ago and paid under 1000 for all 3. Now it would be 2000 or more. If you hunt for them you can still end up with around 150-250 in a blued 700 action by the time you sell the parts off. Back then wood stock were worthless because almost everything was stocked with wood. Now those wood stocks are worth something because everything cheap is now stocked in plastic. Berger .30 cal VLD's use to be about 22.00/100 and now they are almost 50/100. Powder was about 10 bucks and now it's over 20. Even when the 300 RUM first came out the brass was about 45/100 and now it's 100/100. Barrels have probably gone up the least over the last 15-20 years despite steel prices being considerably higher than back then but that is probably a product of more competition.

Yeah... As much as I dislike Remington's current owners, I'm still not willing to forsake a 700 if it's cut for something I want, such as this one. If it shoots, the .270 will have some competition. If it doesn't, I'll continue to hunt happily with my M70s. :grin:

I'll probably have to do the same thing for a third safe unless I'm able to build a new house soon with a vault.

I forgot to add the 2 700mlss .50 cal. muzzleloaders to the list too. I'm kind of a muzzleloader junky too and that is why the Krieger .50 barrel is on the list. Unfortunately due to the wolves the season my dad and I elk hunted for about 10 years was changed from a general hunt to a draw and I haven't drawn since. When it was a general hunt they sold about 650 tags/year and now the drawing is for 50 tags. So the odds are pretty bad to draw with about 300 people applying for those 50 tags. That's why I haven't finished the muzzleloader build. I did find a good rifle hunt though and hopefully I can get my dad set up with a gun to shoot long range too.

Here is my battery of Model 70's. FN 300WM, FN Stainless Featherweight 270WIN, and New Haven 458WM. I have a model 700 LSS in 260 but have been considering selling it to buy another FN Stainless Featherweight in 243 and rebarreling to 260 to complete the superfecta.

I really believe in having a same gun battery. I believe in muscle memory and I don't want to ever have to think about what I am carrying when I am hunting. For ex:

Tang safety?
Push button?
Three position?
No safety?
Remington 700 type?

Hopefully you get the drift. I want the safety to come off automatically without thinking, once the decision to shoot has been rendered. I practise with what I hunt with, and my model 70's are what I use. I even go as far as to mount identical scopes on them so again, simplicity and familiararity with everything.

I have a bit of different styles of rifles around here. Some are AR's, a few bolt actions and a single shot.

Actually the single shot seems to be getting the most attention as of late.

Above is an Encore Pro Hunter Frame with standard Encore Buttstock & Forend. The Forend has been Pillar Bedded by my local Gunsmith.

This is going to be the basis of my new Hunting Rifle Battery. The Barrel in the photo is a 24" Stainless-Steel T/C .30-06 Barrel. I have a new 24" Stainless-Steel T/C .223 Barrel on the way (should be here this coming week). At some point in the future I will more than likely be adding a Muzzleloader Barrel and maybe a .22 LR Barrel.

I'm split between Sako and 700s.
700 - 243,243, 300 RUM
Sako - 270WSM, 338F

I've sold 243, 22-250, 270 Win, 7MM Rem Mag, in the 700s.

I put the 243 CDL in a thumb hole stock and really like it. I can see changing the 300 Sendero to a Long Range Thumb Hole and Jewel this year too.

The Sakos' are fine just the way they are! Finnlight and a Grey Laminate.

Oh almost forgot...
Savage 93R 17HMR Laminate Thumb Hole / Stainless. This is my training "toy" for using a thumb hole stock. I pick it up Friday.

Sweet collection of Sakos. When I first saw the picture, I wondered why they were all pointing down. It has been a long day, and it took a moment to get my bearings. Still, some interesting cartridges and some fine looking rifles.

Thanks for the coments on my Sako collection.
The thing about them is that the most I have paid sofare is $700 without Scope.
I paid $850 for a Finwolf 243 but sold it for $1450.
Most have been found at gunshops and some were from people that new someone that wanted to sale a gun.
