Best .30-06 elk bullet

Sometimes the most accurate bullet won't work as well as the best constructed bullet. If your getting 3/4" groups with ABs you can hunt for a long way and never worry about terminal performance. I would run with the AB's and hunt happily if they stay consistent out to your max range. Scotty

One more voice added to that of Scotty and Bill. Three-quarter inch groups permit you to shoot a looooong way with confidence. The AB will carry the goods to any game in NA.

I am with Scotty .75 should be good enough at practicle 06 ranges.

I certainly hope 3/4" will work, cause that is about as good as I can do with most of mine! I probably need to really buckle down, cause some of you all are making my groups look like they are fired with 9 shot! Scotty

All of the bullets you mentioned will do the job especially the Partition and I like them all except the Barnes, you know "Performance or Deformance" bullet baloney. Barnes does not have guts enough to support a Barnes Forum, I know they sure would not want my impute that comes from four years of off and on again performance. One thing for sure, they are right about it not deforming, sometimes it just zips right on through leaving you with the task of finding game, and don't anyone assume for one minute that I did not place my shots right where they were suppose to be. WOW!!! never disliked a bullet so much, get this, I will give the 130gr TSX one more shot this year out of my 300Win mag. I am not totally closed minded toward Barnes, just real, real, real close to being.

Mike, it seems like you feel pretty strongly about it! I would think if any bullet will open it should be the 130gr one at 300WM speeds... Should make for a good deer whacker! Scotty

Never shot an Elk with my 06, just Deer. But I will agree with a lot of this dialog. You can't go wrong with choices in 165-180 bullets. They are proven Killers. Your Elk going 40 yards on a lung
shot was typical of lung shots and I agree the bullet performed as designed.

Select the bullet that groups best, gives you good velocity be it Partition, AccuBond or E-Tip and not look back. The 30-06 is lethal in the hands of a good marksman providing you Match the bullet to the Game hunted and place the bullet well.

While it is nice to get tighter groups than .75" at 100 yards, that is way more than acceptable hunting accuracy for, as Dr. Mike put it, waaaaayyy out there! When I first bought my Model 70 30-06 in 2003 I bought some of the old style Barnes 150 XBT's to shoot in it and they grouped 1.5" for 5 shots at 100 yards. I made some great long range kills even with that kind of accuracy including a coyote at 650 yards with a neck shot! Yes that was on purpose! And I had witnesses.

Today I have since jettisoned the use of Barnes bullets in my 30-06 because they copper foul my rifle much faster and don't shoot as well as the Noslers do. As 6mm Remington says, a 165 grain bullet is a great choice when you buy Noslers and you wont have to fear under penetration. It is my all-around choice of bullet weight in the 30-06 with the exception of the inclusion of Moose and Grizzly Bear. Then I want a 180 grain bullet.

I like a shoulder shot I hunt in steep brushy thick stuff, plus if I hit an elk and it takes off it could run into another hunter who puts the killing shoot on it. 2 spike elk and 2 black bears, 1 muledeer and about 10 blacktail bucks all went down immediately with shoulder shots from a 35 whelen 250 parts for elk and bear and 200 grn rem cl rn for deer

Nice! I can't wait to try out the 250gr PT out of the Whelen on elk this year RR. Just finished loading up some of my hunting loads. Scotty

Right now, they are my favorite bullet! Just really accurate for the 35 Whelen and pretty speedy as well Mike. Scotty

Scotty,
Don't go showing off those 35 Whelen loads now. It gets me going for Deer Season. Like my 30-06 but love what the Whelen delivers!!!!!!

Don, the Whelen is the All Star of my line up if you ask me and it is a Remington!

It shoots, delivers a moderately heavy bullet with good BC, SD and Speed. Just my idea of perfect. Love the fast movers, but nothing quells like the 35 Whelen does, other than my 338WM. Get your Whelen out buddy and tell it what it means to you! Trust me, it pays off! Scotty

It pains me to say that Mike, but the rifle is a good one and I have nothing to complain about with it. Scotty

So, I take it that you are of the persuasion that we should each adopt at least one Remington just because we don't want them to feel lonely. Kind of like taking an ugly girl to the prom because you feel sorry for her?

I like my Remingtons, it's like Apple Pie and Chevrolet. Never fail to deliver.

Don
