Best 30-06 Load

Give my your best 30-06 load with 180 grain bullets. So far H4350 and IMR4350 have not produced what I wanted for groups.

I would like to have a speed of 2700fps or better.

I have RL19, RL22, Varget, IMR4064 and H4831sc on hand.

For decades I bounced back and forth between IMR4350, Hodgdon H4831 and Alliant Reloder 19 when loading 180's in the .30-06. All worked pretty well, but none stood out so much across several rifles that I could pick one load and stick to it. Then, a few years ago, I tried Ramshot's new Hunter powder with 180's. The first experiments took place in my old NULA with Barnes then-new Triple Shock X-Bullets. Eventually I worked up to 58.0 grains. Accuracy was very fine and muzzle velocity was right around 2800 ft/sec.

I have since tried this load with different 180's in several .30-06's, including my Sauer drilling. Accuracy has been universally very good, and in 24" barrels velocity around 2800 or even higher. Ramshot's own data goes up to 60 grains (with Hornady BTSP Interlocks) but I have never found any reason to go beyond 58.0 grains. The load has worked not only in the NULA and Sauer but in the .30-06 barrel for my T/C Encore and a fine pre-'64 Model 70 Winchester. In the Model 70 (with no changes other than adjusting the trigger and making sure all the screws were tight, including the forend screw) the load grouped around .5" with Sierra GameKings and .8" with Nosler Partitions at 100 yards.

In fact, when I went to New Zealand in early 2007 to test Berger VLD's on wild goats and big red stags, I immediately loaded up 58.0 grains of Hunter behind some 185 VLD's, and got 100-yard groups of .4" at 100 yards, with a muzzle velocity of 2862 ft/sec. Combined with the very high ballistic coefficient of the VLD's, this made shooting at long range very easy in the New Zealand mountains. So now I do have a 180-grain .30-06 load that works in several rifles."

I too have had excellent accuracy from Ramshot Hunter, and also Reloader 22, with the 180 gr bullets.

Not much help here as IMR 4350 and 180's are deadly in my 06, fed 210 made the difference over wrl primers.

Ya, disappointing to learn that WT's rifle doesn't seem to like the 4350's & 180 gr bullets. It's normally a very good combination.

I was having difficulties with 180 Btips and IMR4350 in my Sauer and went to RL22. It shot great. I am thinking about trying that or RL19 next. I know I can get it shooting, I just need the right combo.

I decided that if a 180 PT could kill it, a 165 PT or AB could kill it just as well.

Mostly because I spent many days at the range trying to get my synthetic stock 30-06 to like 180s. But she doesn't.

I hope my wood stock 30-06 likes 180s! I will likely start with H4350, but I have H4831 in the on-deck circle.

Seeing how Joel's rifle shoots that load I'd be hard pressed to look anywhere else. It is a BONE CRUSHER as well. Wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see how well it worked. It changed the way I perceived the 30-06.

Hi WT, I'm shooting nickel size groups with W760 @ 52.5 gr , Nosler brass ,CCI 250 and Sierra 180 gr prohunter.
I haven't run it through a chrono yet but it'll bust right on through a 3" cedar at 100 yards.

Temperatures in 27- 30 * F.

I tried 180 accubonds with RL22 yesterday and it was similar to H4350 1.25-2.25" groups. All shots felt good.

I'm going to try some 150 Interlocks that I have on the shelf next. I have nothing to lose at this point. I am at a loss with this rifle. I don't think it will ever be a consistent MOA shooter.

Don't give up on it until running some 165AB's seated deep with H4350................... I have always had issues in some guns with the 180's........... they either really like or really don't like them.

Can test with the 165BT cheap and see. I have lately just been seating to OAL 3.265 and test shoot right off the bat. Has worked more times than not.

what all primers have you tried? My 06 using IMR-4350 did not do to well with 165 or 180 until I tried a fed 210 primer, wrl primers gave me 3-4 inch groups.

My best hunting load was 61 grains of the "old" military H-4831 with a 180 grain Partition, I had to use Winchester cases to get that much powder in the case. I really can't remember the accuracy but I know that 14 elk didn't like it at all. For deer I used the 150 gr Partition with 52 grains of IMR-4064, which shot under an inch.

IMR 4350 and 180 grain Barnes TTSX have consistently shot under an inch for me with 57 grains in my 30/06.

My 30-06 didn't seem to care much for 165's or 180's, but shot some incredible groups with 54.5 grains of RL17 behind a 200 AccuBond or 58.5 grains of Ramshot Big Game behind a 150 TTSX.
