Best varmint load

What ? Seriously ??.... Nah, just jabbin you.... Never any such thing as TOO big......

Someone else here is going to have to pipe in.... I belive it's the 120gr B-tip that actually has the thicker jacket in this caliber.
Sierra has some 85gr Varmiters I believe.... they are flat-base bullets.

Don't worry I will be using the full power of this rifle when it comes to elk and deer this year  . but I have been looking for something not to costly just for varmints. The load that I am using for elk and deer is a 140 grain nbt with 71 grains of IMR 7828 ssc, which is giving me a three shot group under 3/4 inch. Or do u think that this will be suitable for varmints as well?

For varmits, Sierra makes a 100gr .284 hollow point I would consider.
The 90gr HP sure splat the p-dogs out of my .270 Win.

yup or the 120 bt.

barrel will not last long.

what would be the best load so my barrel would last the longest? Because right now I am using 71 grains of IMR 7828ssc with a 140 grain bt.

Your barrel would be more adversely effected by the volume per unit time of shots (heating it up) than by the total number of shots. I would imagine that you would see measurable throat erosion after 2,000 rounds, but this won't necessarily degrade accuracy--it only means that the effect is measurable. I have a 7 mm Rem Magnum that has now had over 5,000 rounds through it, and it still shoots 3/4 inch groups. It is not as accurate as it once was, but it still shoots tight enough groups that I'm not willing to exchange barrels yet. Consequently, my favourite load for my 7mm WSM is 69 grains of MagPro with a 160 grain AB. It hammers mule deer and elk like the Hammer of Thor.

use a ball powder, it has a lower flame temp than single based (extruded) powders running at the same pressures.

I loaded the 100-grain Sierras in .280 some years ago. I was able to get decent accuracy with them using IMR4064, but velocity was unknown. As the rifle was my only centerfire in those days, I used this load on jackrabbits and it was fairly destructive. It never did anything like I had seen a .22-250 do to a jackrabbit, though. One outing I had only 140-grain loads and hammered the only jack I saw all day long with it. What that 140 did to the jackrabbit was freekin' unbelievable.

Just use your 140 gr BT load, great way to get to know the trajectory and what the 7mm WSM will do.
