Blue Moon Moose Opener

Tomorrow is the subsistence moose opener... I plan to be out there watching the blue moon go down and the sun come up.

Hopefully on a middling bull that wants a ride to my freezer. (y)

Best of luck to you. Our opener is in two weeks. I intend to be out in the bush waiting for the sun to peek over the southeastern hills. I need to invite a moose to accompany me to dinner (or a few, in any case).

Good luck tomorrow. Hope you can tag out on a nice bull.

Good luck on the Moose Doc, what rifle are you taking?

I haven't decided on a rifle, yet--perhaps the 35 Whelen or the 325 WSM, though one of my 280 Rema is a viable contender.

Hodgeman is out right now, I believe. Our opener is not until August 15. Ah, moose, I can taste 'em now.

Mike,

The 35 Whelen needs a turn. ;) What about the 358 Norma Mag? That would be a hammer.

Good call, Jim. If it shoots well next week, it will assuredly be in contention. Right now, I'm leaning toward the Whelen. The accuracy of those last two sets of loads makes it hard not to want to carry that rifle afield.

Good luck with the moose hunting boys!! Defintley be warm out this time of year. Need a plan for dealing with the meat pronto.

What? You don't let it cook under the mid-morning sun? Normally we have the meat dressed and at the butchers within an hour or so.

Well, the moose hunt was a blast despite no one telling the moose it was a participatory event on their part.

I did have a very nice bull dead to rights at 403yds and he stood there for at least 20 minutes...the only issue is he was a half mile from our hunt boundary! Sometimes hunting all these checkerboard permits is a PITA.

Saw 16 moose over 3 days and that's pretty exceptional for this area, just no luck in sealing the deal yet. Gorgeous weather for the most part and I managed a half gallon of blueberries for the freezer.

half gallon of blueberries for the freezer... how many never made it to the picking bucket?

Glad you had a good time chasing swamp donkey's. I really enjoyed the blueberries when I was moose hunting a couple years ago. Hopefully you punch your tag and share the experience with the rest of us.

Sixteen Moose in 3 days I believe you had a great hunt . It sounds like you should have not trouble filling the freezer this fall (y).
Continued good hunting :) looking forward to the photos and continued stories..

Blessings,
Dan
