Tuesday evening, I went out with my Dad and we spotted a bunch of deer in the field we hunt. There was about 20 does and 3 bucks. We snuck across one field out to the edge of the field they were in. Dad dropped his buck at 265 yards with his 300 RUM and 180 Accubonds. He then went to give me the keys so I could go get the truck and he couldnt find them. Thought he locked them in the truck. No big deal. I called little bro and he brought out the spare set. But the keys werent in the truck. So we went and picked up Dad's deer and started lookin for his keys. We looked for almost 2 hours in the dark through the pasture and where we crossed the fences. No luck. Figured we would come back out the next morning and look while we had good daylight.
Yesterday morning, I brought one of my little 12 year old buddies out to try and get his first whitetail doe since his dad had to work. He has been my little sidekick since he was 3 years old, and he made me promise when he was about 5 that I would take him out deer hunting when he got old enough. He had already made awesome shots on a mulie buck and doe with his Dad's 280 Rem. Both heart shots on those. We drove out and waited for good daylight so we could see since there has still been a few grizzlies hanging around. We spotted 2 does and a buck and made a great stalk. The doe walked past us about 100 yards out and Pete tried to get on here with his Dad's 280 but his bipod wasnt long enough. This whole time, he was laying in a swampy mess and getting soaked but we had nowhere else we could get to. He's a tough little bugger. But I handed him my Tikka T3 270 Win with my taller bipod and he found her in the scope. He shot and she ran 40 yards and piled up. Shot her right through the heart with a 130gr AccuBond! He was as happy as could be!
After loading his doe up, we drove up to see if there was anything on the other side of the highway. Dad was out lookin for his keys so we went out to help. We had given up and were walking back to the truck. About 40 yards from the first fence we crossed, Pete found Dad's keys in a clump of grass! He was the man of the day since Dad's only key to one side of his tool box at work was on that keychain! Needless to say, Dad is going to have some keys made tomorrow. While we were lookin for the keys, there was a group of 20 or so does and a buck out in the stubble field where Dad shot his buck the evening before. So we went back and got our rifles and snuck back out to the edge of the field. I got settled on a doe and my buddy from Missoula settled on the buck. We counted to 3 and shot. I dropped my doe but Jason missed the buck twice. Since I had my VX-3 with CDS dialed to the 325 yards that the deer where at, I told Jason to use my rifle. The buck stopped, Jason shot, and hit him perfect. He ran a ways and fell. Dad was going to shoot a doe too but the only one's that stopped were fawns and he couldnt get steady. We had a blast yesterday morning. My other younger brother ended up missing a buck yesterday evening in the same field. Now for the pictures!
