Out for an early October doe season and my buddy and I both got some does. We set up pretty early well before shooting time sitting on a dam overlooking a lake in some tall grass. My buddy laid down to take a nap while we were waiting. Around 620 he hears something moving down the trail through the grass and gets my attention. When I look over I can see the back of a deer against the sky line and then the head comes up and I see a nice set of 4x4 or 4x5 antlers. This buck is only 10 ft from us! My buddy loses his nerve thinking this deer is gonna come step on him and sits up, the buck gives a loud snort and bolts off. We kind of chuckle about it and the wait continues.
About 5 minutes after shooting time a doe comes out across the lake, 117 yards. I drop her in her tracks with my 7RemMag. My buddy saw something move in the tree line and finds it with his range finder and asks to see my rifle. He had an open sight 30-30. I hand it to him and he fires, dropping the doe in her tracks also. We had both deer dressed and dragging out of the field by 732!
Mine was shot broadside right behind high shoulder, bullet in and out. He shot his quarting to him, bullet entered the low neck making a nasty looking wound. When I skinned them I found the BT he shot her with on the last rib sticking in the skin. No vitals were touched, just a broken shoulder and I presume a broken or severed spine from the neck shot. Anyway here is the picture of the 140gr 7mm BT. My MV is 2950fps and final weight was 69.2gr.
