Hey guys looking for a load for my new 45-70. Basically for deer and elk from zero to about 200 yards. I just outfitted it with a marble peep. Any ideas?

No idea what to use, but it sure is an attractive addition. Can't help but enjoy the looks.

Lead cast at slow speeds or a controlled expansion at higher speeds?

Heavy lead and some RL7!

405's and 40 grains of RL7 runs about 1600 in my Guide Rifle. Can't imagine how much animal it would take to stop one.

The Lyman #457193 cast 405 flat nose doing around 1400 fps will drill a hole completely through most any critter you want to shoot. My favorite load is 70 grs by weight FFG Goex black powder compressed about 1/10" in a WW case with a Fed 215 primer. Bullet cast of wheel weights comes out of my mold 418 grs and lubed with SPG black powder bullet lube. If you want to shoot a smokeless powder Accurate XMP 5744 shoots really well with cast. 28 to 30 grs will duplicate the velocity of BP with this bullet. You will need to learn the drop of your bullet at what ever range you will be shooting. Usually with a 100 yards zero you will be close to 6" high at 50 yards and 6" low at 150 and 12" low at 200.

If you want to speed things up and flatten out trajectory go to the suggested hunting load in the Sierra manual 4th edition for their 300 gr HP 51.8 gr IMR 4198 for 2150 fps. It packs a punch on both ends but it is a real deer killer.

45 RL 7, Starline Brass, CCI LR, 350 Kodiak, about 1900-1920. Very accurate from my 22" 1895. Quickload says pressure is 32-33.

I liked 47gr IMR 4198/ ww brass/BR2 primer/ Hornady 350RN in my first Marlin 1895. Recoil not bad and plenty flat to 200yds. Will also shoot through an elk from about any angle! Of course, if you decide to go "Old School", your 405gr lead ( or 500gr!) around 1200-1400 would be a sweety, and again, will shoot through about anything, ha. ( Soooo....what would take for that Marlin 1895 Limited, now that "my prayers" enabled you to get that 1885? :) Merry xmas dude!

Man I still need to get out and try those Kodiaks.

That is a really nice rifle Fotis...

I'd be real tempted to run a 400 - 500 gr lead bullet through it at modest velocity, just like the old buffalo hunters...

And avoid the common 300 gr JHP's at high vel... They shoot well, but tend to over-expand & under-penetrate.

FWIW, Guy

Yup Looks like 405 at 1600 fps or so

Years ago I smacked a good sized mulie doe, at about 70 yards, with a 405 gr Remington FNSP at about 1650 fps out of a Marlin Guide Gun....

Worked really well! Complete penetration - which I'd expect on a broadside shot - and not much expansion, from what I could tell from the wound track.

Used Reloader 7 for that load.

That's about what I used this year. It's amazing how well those wide flat noses work on animals. They leak ALOT from the exits as well.

Hornady 350 vr SP and H322 would be tough to beat for speed and accuracy.
