Caliber Decision

'Flatter' and 'Longer Range' don't really mean the same thing they used to. I love the .25-06.... always have . But, I'll never run another .25 anything. You want .257 Roy performance.... you can get it with the .264 Winny, with cheaper brass and an infinitely greater propensity for LR work given the cornucopia of excellent 6.5 bullets.

100s at warp speed... .264 does it better than .257.

140 grain .600+ BC pills at 3100+... not even a chance with the Roy.

Wherever there's a .25.... there's a better 6.5... that's just how it is man.

Argumentative and crap! Fine, have it your way but save the part about dumping on others and their favorite calibers. I am tired of this thread already!

Wherever there's a 6.5...there's a better 7mm...that's just how it is man.

I hear ya Charlie. Some folks just can't get their minds off the BC charts and recognize that lot's of fellows are totally content with shooting out to 400 or so. Just like a broken freekin record.

OP used Long Range.... not me. If that's truly the interest, then 'nostalgia' and 'favorite caliber' gain you nothing in drift at 750. Out to four or five bills.... then smoke what'cha got. But after that, BC is the name of the game, the 6s and 6.5s have that in spades over the .25s.... it is what it is.

Why do you think they didn't make a .25 Nosler?

Just sayin'....

With me it is: "smoke em if you got em" and enjoy what you have. Here in western Washington, nobody is shooting anything but hot air over 400 yards anyhow! Plus when you get to be over 70 years old, if you still can see, it becomes somewhat academic as well.

I always believe it "live and let live", which means stashing the dump on others who happen to think a little differently then you. Dissing other shooters for something as silly as caliber choice is as bad as being an anti gun yap!

Nearly every caliber that I shoot is one hundred years old, except the 7mm Mag. You may think me an old futz but I am a shooting old futz, still.

My favorite calibers are all way before my time (1982). 257 Bob and Bee, 35 Whelen, and 45/70 all have gotten better with age (and improved bullet design). Does that make me an old futz

Can't we all just get along?
I didn't think Songdog was ragging on me but I do appreciate the support. It was the writing and talking of Ron Spomer that really going down the 6.5 road after Songdog put the idea in my head. I looked at the ballistics, and that I could get a decent rifle at a fair price in a left hand action, that spurred me onward.
Hi Yo Silver, Away! Now I need to go shoot some .338 tomorrow.

Vince

The 6.5/284 is a great round and the Savage will be a tackdriver, excellent choice. The 6.5's have a lot going for them.

I love my .25-06, but really feel limited in the bullet selection department. Nosler does better than most with 7 offerings. Berger now makes one! Nosler makes 12 different 6.5 mm's, and 20 or so 6mm's. So if a guy really wants flexibility and options the .257's are orphans. Go to the accurateshooter forums, and they don't have one that .257's fit into :( . Enough whining. I'm about to dust off my .243 and try some different bullets. Need some light and fast, maybe some turkey fmj's, like some deep penetrators, too. Wonderful having choices. 6.5 is a good one too!

If you live long enough? My newest addition is the 9.3x74R which was commercialized in Germany in 1905. It is a hoot to shoot.

I certainly hope I did not induce homicidal intent with my previous chirography.

 I am not homicidal, maybe maniacal but going to jail at my age is way out of my planning intentions! You are safe as you can be!

The Joie de vivre of this convocation leave no mirth unturned.

I lived in Western WA for better than a dozen years.... and I killed stuff out past 600... and shot out to 1400 a bunch.

I'm not dumping on anything.... in fact, I clearly stated my love for the .25-06 in this post. I'm simply stating fact, particularly in regard to the Long Range side of the OPs post. I'd love to see some viable .25 cal pills in the .500-.550 BC range.... but it ain't gonna happen. So, the .25 gets hamstrung in comparison to the siblings just above and below.... which receive tremendous attention from bullet manufacturers, especially in the LR bullet department.

Hornady, Lapua, and now Nosler all have new cartridges designed specifically for 600 yard shooting/hunting.... all built around 6.5mm projectiles. One could site any number if reasons as to why all three ended up at 6.5... but alas, they all did. With such a heavy investment in those cartridges, I'm pretty sure you're going to see a steady supply of high quality 6.5 components.

6.5s are a win/win/win/win kinda deal....

Well I am glad that you saw and shot game at 1200 yards in western Washington but most of the area where I live, it is not to be. Maybe your intentions are good, maybe they aren't. Maybe your trying to be helpful maybe not! Read what I said (which you quoted above) again and think about it.

Maybe I am happy just where I am and do not need some guy telling me what I need and what I should get rid of?! Maybe I am old and disabled and don't need somebody half my age to tell me what I should be doing???? Maybe I don't remember asking you for an opinion on what I should be shooting!?

Not telling you... telling the OP, because he asked. You read the facts and got bothered, then applied it to your situation.... not the OP's. I don't care what you shoot... and didn't make any specific comment toward you at any time. Chill out....

Never said I shot at game at 1200.... seems maybe you're the one with the reading comprehension problem.

Excuse me!!!! You said 1400 yards, my mistake laser eyes but I don't believe the first liar, he does not have a chance!. I mispoke! Now, go back where ever you came from and leave me out of your pointed diatribes!

I was kidding, but not anymore big-mouth!

Vince....given that you have a 338 and a 30-06...to have a well rounded 3 gun battery what you need is a lighter round, even lighter than the 25-06 or 257...any flavor of 270 is a mighty fine round, but won't do anything the 30-06 won't do...

Based on what you posted...I have to recommend light caliber...anything from 223 Rem up to 243 Win/6mm Rem...

Edited to add: Nothing wrong with 25 caliber rifles....25-06 was the round that taught me how to shoot long range (over 400 yards) back when I was a kid, most folks had never even heard of the 25-06.

I just don't think it would be the best "fit" for Vince's need in this case.

Thank you Ridgerunner.
Given that my wife calls me a gunslut I'll probably end up with something lighter later. I'm looking at the 6.5 as my LR deer/antelope gun. The 30-06, because it's stainless with a laminated stock and short barrel, as my rough weather brush country gun. The .338 is my all around and big stuff gun.
I'm looking to use the .338 for elk and mule deer mostly in the western states. The 6.5 as my western states deer/antelope/sheep gun. The 30-06 fills the niche for handy, in the truck, hog rifle when I get the opportunity to go hunt hogs at closer than 400 Yards. Given that 200 Yards is a long shot in Newfoundland, from what I'm told, and that it's so brushy with frequent inclement weather that's the rifle I plan to take on my 2015 moose hunt. I was going to take the .338 but being that it's a blued rifle I'd rather not have to wipe it down every night with oil to keep it from rusting.
Who knows, the 6.5 might make a good elk rifle too, but I do admit to liking more power and bigger bullets as a general rule. For what I do I think I've got most of my bases covered and can always drag my right handed 25-06 out of the safe, or my AR, if I want to hunt predators. One of these days I'll probably acquire a 22-250 and a .416 of some sort to round out the collection. :)

Read it again there chief.... one more try. Remember to sound out the big words..... Killed at 600+, and shot out to 1400. Once again, this isn't about quarter bores for hunting in the Cascades.

I'm not kidding.... and you started it, not me. I backed my point with logic and facts..... you backed yours with feelings.... you must be either a Democrat... or a woman.

I love my 257 BEE and 25-06. That said I also want a .264 win mag. Also a 26 nosler someday if the component prices ever come down.
